Metronidazole, which has antimicrobial properties, is also used to treat scratches and other damage to the skin.
In what cases is it used?
The drug is intended to combat dangerous microorganisms. The medicine affects bacteria without affecting healthy cells. On farms, even if hygiene measures are observed, cases of infection of turkey poults sometimes occur. Metronidazole saves you from diseases such as histomoniasis. The drug is also effective against coccidiosis and trichomoniasis. Viruses weaken chicks, lead to weight loss and often result in the death of poultry. There is a threat of human infection through meat products.
Instructions for using Metronidazole for turkeys
The tablets are pre-ground to a powder state. To prepare the solution, water is taken after boiling and settling. Methods of using the drug:
- The medicine is mixed into the food and given 3 times a day. If you calculate the norm depending on weight, 1 tablet is enough for 10 kg of weight.
- An antibiotic is added to drinking water. 3 g of powder is diluted in 5 liters of water.
The second method is more suitable for turkey poults. To give water to very small chicks, use a pipette.
How to solder for histomonosis
Chicks under the age of 2 or 3 months are susceptible to the disease. Histomoniasis rarely occurs in adult turkeys. Microbes that attack the liver are easy to deal with at the onset of the disease. Dosage and methods of application depend on the weight of the bird. For treatment, Metronidazole is mixed with food. For 1 kg of weight you will need 30 mg of powder. The medicine is given for 7 days.
Doses for coccidiosis
Turkey poults can become ill with coccidiosis immediately after birth. The disease completely paralyzes the liver and causes a malfunction of the digestive system.
How to drink with trichomoniasis
The disease affects turkey poults starting from 3 weeks of age. When the disease occurs, ulcers appear on the mucous membrane, and the gastrointestinal tract gradually ceases to function. Untimely treatment threatens the death of birds. The limit per kilogram of body weight is 35 mg. It is necessary to feed the chicks with an antibiotic for 3 to 6 days. Metronidazole is also used to treat the affected areas. To do this, the drug is diluted in water and the wounds are treated with a 1% solution.
Metronidazole tablets for sinusitis
An infectious runny nose, causing inflammation of the mucous membrane of the respiratory system, occurs in 2-week-old turkey poults. Sinusitis inhibits the normal development of birds, so treatment of young animals begins as early as possible. The norm for calculation per 1 kg is 20 mg of the drug per course of 3-5 days.
Metronidazole is not used alone, but in combination with Tylosin. Sometimes the antibiotic pair is Farmazin.Veterinarians advise not to allow cases of the disease, but to carry out timely prevention.
For tuberculosis
There are no methods for treating tuberculosis in turkey poults. The disease spreads instantly and ends in the death of birds. The room must be ventilated and extensive cleaning done using disinfectants.
Metronidazole can be used as a preventive measure. For preventive drinking, 25 mg of the substance is taken per kilogram of weight. Then one turkey is weighed.
The resulting value is multiplied by the number of chicks. On average, it turns out that for 10 chicks weighing 500 g you will need 1 tablet per liter of water. This solution is added to the drinking bowl once a day. Repeat for no more than 5 days.
Possible side effects
After taking the drug, turkey poults experience almost no side effects. Sometimes Metronidazole causes loss of appetite or allergic reactions. In some cases, bursts of excitability are observed.
Long-term use of the medicine is fraught with the risk of fungus. This is due to a violation of the microflora and the development of the inflammatory process of the mucous membranes.
What are the contraindications?
The drug has almost no restrictions on its use. The exceptions are:
- Pathologies of the liver or kidneys.
- Intolerance to the components included in the drug.
- Brain damage.
- Metronidazole is not combined with other antibiotics.
Before treating sick turkey poults, it is advised to consult a veterinarian.
Storage conditions
The drug is stored for 3 years after release. On the farm, medicine packages are kept at temperatures up to 25 °C in a space without access to light. It is not recommended to use Metronidazole after the expiration date.
Analogues of the drug
The antibiotic has several analogues:
- Metrogyl is also successfully used to treat diseases that can be treated with Metronidazole. The drug is available in tablet form and as a solution for injections.
- "Flagyl" is sold in the form of candles.
- An ointment called “Rozesk” is convenient to use for treating external wounds.
- The Bacimex solution is purchased when prescribing a course of injections.
It is better to discuss the choice of an alternative remedy with your veterinarian first. Poultry farmers have long used Metronidazole as a safe means for the prevention and treatment of turkey poults. The effect of medications will be complemented by hygiene measures. If all rules for maintenance and care are followed, the chicks will remain healthy, quickly grow stronger and gain weight.
