Potatoes are the favorite vegetable of all people in the post-Soviet space; moreover, they are the main side dish on the tables of ordinary people. Many people try to grow it on their plot, but it takes a lot of effort to fight the beetles that quickly destroy the plantings. To get rid of this pest once and for all, many use the drug Bison for the Colorado potato beetle. It has proven itself in the fight against the Colorado potato beetle and many other plant pests.
Description of the drug
The drug is produced by Shchelkovo Agrokhim CJSC on the territory of the Russian Federation.It has a liquid form, packaged in glass ampoules of 1 milliliter or in a plastic ampoule of 5 milliliters.
The insecticide against beetles contains the substance imidacloprid. Once on plants, it is quickly absorbed into the green mass and retains its properties for 30 days. The substance enters the insect's body through the intestinal contact route and quickly kills it.
Effect of the drug
Since the substance is absorbed into the plant, harvesting can be done after 30 days, when the chemical ceases to be active. For the same reason, the solution applied to plants is not afraid of rain and sunlight. It can poison beetles for a month.
Once in the intestinal tract, the substance destroys the insect from the inside. It acts on the nervous system by blocking the transmission of impulses. If the substance gets on the legs or abdomen of an insect, the latter experiences paralysis and death within a few seconds. Since the beetles do not eat anything other than potato leaves, after ingesting the poison, the pests disappear from the treated area already on the second day. The action continues for a month, which means that a beetle that accidentally enters the area from another field will also become poisoned by eating harmful leaves.
Method of use of the drug
The preparation for processing is very simple. For initial familiarization with the drug, there are instructions for use on the packaging, which you should read before using the poison:
- Before starting preparation, put on rubber gloves and prepare the solution carefully so that it does not accidentally come into contact with the skin or mucous membranes. If the substance does get on your skin, wash it with running water and soap.
- Open the ampoule, 1 milliliter of poison is enough for a 10-liter bucket of water, so the ampoule is diluted in 200 grams of water, and then the concentrate is diluted in 10 liters.
- An ampoule with 5 milliliters of solution is prepared differently; for this you need to dilute the entire composition in 1 liter of water, take 200 grams of the resulting concentrate and dilute it in 10 liters of water. The active substance evaporates, so the diluted liquid cannot be stored. It must be used immediately after preparation.
- The area is treated by spraying the stems and leaves of plants using a spray bottle or a simple broom. In this case, a bucket of water is enough to neutralize 1–2 acres of contaminated area. Choose cloudy, windless weather without rain. If you spray plants in the scorching sun, then the leaves will get a thermal burn. Therefore, the best time to use is early morning or evening, after sunset.
Using the drug against other insects
The instructions for use state that Bison is used not only against the Colorado potato beetle on potatoes, it is also effective for killing cucumbers, tomatoes and other plants:
- aphids;
- thrips;
- whiteflies;
- ticks;
- scoop;
- moth;
- cabbage butterfly.
As you can see, this drug can be used throughout the entire area, regardless of plantings, leaf-eating and sucking insects.
Precautionary measures
Since the drug Zubr has a third hazard class, when using it you need to take precautions:
- When preparing the solution, use a face mask, since the substance is volatile, it evaporates in the open air and enters the respiratory tract.
- Gloves will protect a person from getting poison on the surface of the skin.
- When spraying plants, you need to wear a protective suit, mask and gloves. After treatment, wash all equipment using washing powder, and wash your hands and face in running water and soap.
- Although the poison is not as dangerous for humans as it is for insects, the description states that if precautions are ignored, a person can get mild poisoning of the body if the solution gets inside. Chemical burn or allergic reaction when the substance comes into contact with the skin.
Review Reviews
Since Zubr has been on the Russian market for more than 10 years, it has already received numerous reviews from gardeners. Let's consider one of them:
Stepan from Volgograd writes: “We didn’t plant potatoes in the garden before, so we didn’t encounter the Colorado potato beetle. And last year they planted it, hordes of omnivorous beetles filled the potato field, there was no escape. I bought the Bison on the recommendation of a store salesperson. I treated the area once, and after a week the beetles were gone. The remedy for the Colorado potato beetle really works. True, after a month the beetles began to return to the potatoes, but by that time they had flowered, and the beetles no longer posed a danger to the crop. Therefore, the potatoes were a success. What I like about the product is the ease of preparing the composition, the frequency of use and the low price.”
