How to properly inject a goat with your own hands and the drug administration schedule

Manipulations with injections are not necessarily associated with animal diseases. Animals are often vaccinated through injections. An injection is the best way to ensure rapid action of drugs, which can be important in intensive care. Therefore, it is advisable for every owner to know how to properly inject a goat and the basic procedure.

What will you need for this?

When treating animals, medications are often administered using syringes. As a rule, the type of medicine determines the method of its administration and the volume of the syringe:

  • for intradermal injections, 1-2 ml syringes with short needles are used;
  • to perform the procedure subcutaneously, select syringes of the required volume (it is advisable to focus on the amount of the drug so as not to fill the syringe several times);
  • For intramuscular manipulations, syringes with a volume of 1-20 ml are selected.

To give an injection, you will need a syringe of the required volume, a cotton pad, and a disinfectant composition. When choosing instruments, take into account the methods of administering various drugs (intradermal, subcutaneous, intramuscular, intravenous, intraabdominal, intraosseous).

In what cases is it necessary to give an injection?

Vaccination against most diseases is carried out through injections. Mandatory vaccinations are given against a number of diseases:

  • Foot and mouth disease is quickly transmitted through animal contact. Therefore, in addition to vaccination, they do a general disinfection of the room and all cells;
  • To prevent the appearance of smallpox, goats begin to be injected with the vaccine at 3 months of age. Revaccination is done every year;
  • It is important to prevent animals from becoming infected with brucellosis, since the disease is transmitted to humans through milk. Animals from 2-3 months of age in farms with an unfavorable disease situation are subject to mandatory vaccination.

At three months of age, pets are vaccinated against anthrax. Adult animals are given injections every year. All goats arriving on the farm must be vaccinated.

How to do this correctly?

Before giving the injection, wash your hands thoroughly with soap. The area of the animal's skin intended for administration of the drug is disinfected. Manipulations are carried out according to the following schemes:

  • an intradermal injection is made into a small fold of skin (on the underside of the tail), which is collected using the fingers of the left hand.In this case, the needle is inserted under the skin gradually, holding it almost parallel to the surface;
  • To make a subcutaneous injection, the goat is fixed in a standing position. An area of the inner thigh or the middle third of the neck is suitable for manipulation. Before manipulation, grab a large fold of skin with your middle and thumb, and make a depression in the fold with your index finger. The needle is inserted to a depth of 1.5-2 cm with a sharp movement;
  • When administering the drug intramuscularly, goats are kept in a standing position. For injections, areas with large muscle groups are selected (inner thigh, upper or middle part of the neck). The needle is inserted into the muscle perpendicular to the surface of the body, to a depth of 2-3 cm.

If the syringe is filled with the drug 2-3 times, then the needle is not removed from the skin or body, but only the syringe is disconnected. At the end of the procedure, the injection site is treated with a disinfectant and lightly massaged.

It’s easy to give your pets an injection yourself. You need to prepare the instrument in accordance with the instructions for the drug and know the injection schedule. Goats practically do not get sick with a properly formulated diet and good care, and periodic vaccinations are tolerated.
