Often, during and after birth, complications arise in animals - the uterus does not contract actively enough, the placenta does not pass for a long time, which increases the risk of infection of the reproductive organ, and a bacterial infection occurs. In such cases, veterinarians prescribe drugs that stimulate labor. The product "Uteroton" is used for goats, pigs, cows, and is sold in veterinary pharmacies.
Description of the drug "Uteroton"
Uteroton is a solution for intravenous or intramuscular administration containing propranolol hydrochloride.Belongs to the group of stimulants of contractile activity of the myometrium (muscular uterine layer). After administration, the goat activates its own oxytocin, a hormone responsible for the contraction of the uterine muscles, the production of colostrum and its movement through the milk ducts to the nipple. The drug also has a powerful anti-stress effect.
Sold in glass containers of 100 milliliters in the form of a ready-made solution for injection (it does not need to be diluted with anything).
In what cases is it used?
Uteroton is prescribed to goats for the following conditions:
- stimulation of labor with diagnosed atony (loss of tone of the uterine muscles), hypotension (weak uterine tone), prevention of untimely discharge of the placenta;
- inability to contract the uterus to its original size after childbirth due to its damage (viral or mechanical etiology);
- in the complex treatment of endometritis (inflammation of the uterine layer of a bacterial nature) after childbirth;
- increasing fertility during artificial insemination or before mating.
Usually, “Uteroton” is prescribed by a veterinarian if the goat has problems during childbirth, or after birth the placenta is retained. But experienced farmers who know the characteristics of specific goats can use the drug themselves.
Instructions for use in veterinary medicine for goats
Goats are most often administered Uteroton intramuscularly, unless the condition is acute and does not require immediate injection into a vein. The dosage is calculated by the veterinarian and depends on the weight of the animal. A dose of 10 ml is usually used for cattle; 5 ml of the drug is enough for goats. According to the instructions, “Uteroton” is used as follows:
- to stimulate contractions and increase the tone of the uterine muscles - inject once before childbirth;
- if the placenta does not pass on time, give injections every 12 hours three times;
- in case of non-contraction of the uterus and the development of endometritis, to accelerate the release of inflammatory exudate - three times, once a day, as part of complex treatment;
- during mating to increase fertility - once half an hour before the procedure.
The product is accurately dosed and administered using a disposable sterile syringe. You should not violate the regimen of use, as this will cause the medicine to lose its effectiveness. If the farmer forgot to give the goat the next injection on time, it is necessary to do this as soon as possible, but do not administer a double dose to compensate for the omission.
Side effects of the drug
"Uteroton" rarely causes side effects if the goat is not allergic to the active component of the drug.
If the dosage of Uteroton has been exceeded, the goat may develop the following symptoms:
- decreased heart rate;
- bronchospasm;
- pressure drop;
- muscle weakness.
Due to a severe overdose, the animal’s heart can beat less than 50 times per minute, which requires immediate treatment with Atropine, Izadrin or Orciprenaline2.
Contraindications of the drug
“Uteroton” cannot be used during pregnancy if the goat is not yet preparing for childbirth - this will cause a miscarriage. Also, drugs that increase the contractile activity of the uterus are not prescribed if the fetus is positioned incorrectly, when it comes out feet first.
While feeding a newborn goat, the use of “Uteroton” (in case of delayed placenta and development of endometritis) is permitted only under the supervision of a veterinarian. It is not recommended to prescribe the product to young animals.
Expiration date and storage rules
"Uteroton" is stored in a room with a temperature range of no more than +5...+25 OC, separately from animal food, without opening the original packaging. The medicine should not be exposed to direct sunlight. The product can be stored for 36 months from the date of production, after which it is prohibited to use it. If the package has already been opened, the drug is good for no longer than two weeks; any leftovers should be discarded.
Are there any analogues?
Preparations similar to Uteroton should also contain substances that stimulate contractile activity of the uterus. In veterinary medicine they are used:
- "Oxytocin";
- "Uterobag";
- "Magestrophan";
- "Pituitrin";
- "Prostenon."
The dosage of the drug and the frequency of use are calculated by the veterinarian in each specific case separately. "Uteroton" is a safe product for animals (safety class - 4, according to GOST), rarely causes side effects, helps to avoid complications during and after childbirth. It is recommended to use it after consultation with a veterinarian. Experienced farmers should carefully follow the instructions for use and monitor the condition of the animal.
