Biological properties and composition of yeast
Yeasts are single-celled fungi. They include white and carbohydrate components, mineral elements, B vitamins. A gardener can use their biological properties to achieve:
- qualitative improvement of soil composition;
- the appearance of well-flowering shoots, a significant increase in the number of ovaries;
- significantly increasing the resistance of seedlings to unfavorable climatic conditions;
- significant improvement in plant immunity;
- obtaining a harvest that is environmentally friendly.
Impact on seedlings and adult tomato bushes
Is it possible to use yeast to feed seedlings and adult bushes? The product can be applied both to newly emerging tomato shoots and to already formed bushes.
Increasing the growth of tomatoes
The product allows gardeners to grow tomato bushes much faster than without the use of fertilizer. This effect is due to the special properties of fungi, which change the composition of the soil, increasing the volume of nitrogen compounds. If you feed seedlings with yeast correctly and in a timely manner, you will notice accelerated growth within a couple of days.
General strengthening supplement
Using yeast feeding will allow the gardener to get more fruit than usual, while saving money on the purchase of expensive synthetic fertilizers. The growing season of plants is also significantly reduced. Yeast fertilizer also affects the taste characteristics of tomatoes.A gardener who uses yeast will receive fruits that have excellent taste and aroma.
To strengthen the plant immune system
Due to the fact that the product is a supplier of natural microorganisms, it helps strengthen the immune system of tomatoes. It is especially good at protecting tomatoes from late blight, a disease also known as brown rot.
Fertilizing to attract pollinators
Since yeast improves the aroma of plants, fertilized bushes become the object of attention of pollinating insects (bumblebees, bees).
This useful property of yeast feeding is relevant for gardeners who grow tomatoes outdoors and not in a greenhouse.
Advantages and disadvantages of yeast feeding
There are gardeners who believe that yeast is not a fertilizer in the generally accepted sense of the word, but a plant growth accelerator. Be that as it may, yeast has the following advantages:
- enrichment of the earth with protein and amino acid elements, organic iron, and other micro- and macrocomponents;
- acceleration of plant growth;
- improvement of rhizome growth;
- a noticeable improvement in the immunity of tomatoes, reducing the likelihood of fungal infection;
- low cost, ease of preparation and use.
The disadvantages include the fact that yeast feeding cannot be used more than three times per season. In addition, the fertilizer is effective only in warm conditions. In cold conditions, fermentation will stop and the effect of fertilizing will not be manifested in any way.
In what form is it better to apply?
It does not matter what kind of yeast is used for fertilizer - raw or dry. Both will be equally effective. It is possible to make fertilizing even from old bread with crackers.
Raw
Recipe for making fertilizer from dry yeast:
- Place 100 grams in a ten-liter container filled with heated water.
- Pour 2 tablespoons of sugar into the container to activate fermentation.
- Wait 2 hours.
- Dilute the resulting mixture in 50 liters of water.
Dry
Recipe for preparing fertilizer from raw product:
- Mix 200 grams of raw yeast with one liter of milk.
- Wait a couple of hours for the starter to increase in volume.
- Dilute the finished mixture with water (the volume of water should be ten times the volume of the mixture).
How to apply correctly
There are 2 types of yeast fertilizers for tomatoes - root and foliar. Both types of fertilizers are effective; the differences lie only in the method of application and composition.
Under the root
It is recommended to fertilize tomatoes using the root method as soon as 2 leaves appear on the seedlings. The essence of the method is to simply water the plants. The formed bushes are watered with 2 liters of fertilizer. For seedlings that have taken root in a new place, four times less fertilizer is needed.
Foliar method
Foliar feeding is very useful for tomatoes. After the seedlings are transplanted into a greenhouse or garden bed, it is not recommended to water them. The root system has not yet developed enough, so the tomatoes are sprayed.
Foliar feeding has the following advantages:
- possible to do at the initial stages of seedling life;
- capillaries of stems and leaves deliver useful elements in full. Delivery of nutritional components is carried out much faster than when applying root feeding;
- the prepared mixture is saved.
Attention! Foliar feeding should be less concentrated than root feeding. Otherwise, the gardener risks burning the leaves of the plants.
Yeast feed recipe
Top dressing can be prepared according to a variety of recipes.Each recipe differs from the others in a special ingredient.
With hops
Collect 1 cup of hop cones and pour them into boiled hot water. The cones are cooked for about fifty minutes. After the broth has cooled, pour 4 tablespoons of flour and 2 tablespoons of sugar into it. Place the mixture in a warm place for a day. After this, add a couple of potatoes, chopped with a grater, and leave for another day. Pour 9 liters of water into the mixture, after filtering.
With chicken droppings
Mix one third cup of granulated sugar, a quarter kilogram of raw yeast, wood ash and chicken manure (two cups each). Leave the mixture to ferment for 2 hours. In order to prepare a working fertilizer, pour the mixture into a ten-liter container with heated water.
From live yeast and nettles
You will need a capacious container of fifty liters. Collect green nettles. As the grass wanders, it saturates the liquid with nitrogen elements. Grind the nettles and place them in a container. Pour half a kilogram of yeast and a loaf of bread. Then pour heated water into the container (so that it completely fills the mixture) and let it ferment for a couple of days. You can check whether the fertilizer is ready by the unusual aroma of fermented nettles. Dilute the mixture with water (one to ten). One bush will need a liter of fertilizer.
With milk
In order to make this top dressing, you will need 1 liter of milk (from the cow), a couple of packets of granulated yeast (seven grams each). Fermentation lasts about three hours. Each liter of the finished mixture must be filled with ten liters of heated water.
Yeast with sugar
You will need ten grams of yeast product, one third of a glass of granulated sugar. Pour the ingredients into a bucket of heated water (volume - 10 liters).You can also add a couple of ascorbic acids and a handful of earth to enhance the effect of the fungi. Fermentation lasts a couple of days. Don't forget to stir the mixture. Dilute with water in a ratio of one to five.
With ash
Mix one hundred grams of yeast product with ten liters of heated water. Pour half a kilogram of wood ash into the mixture. Fertilizer can be used while tomatoes are actively growing.
With bread additives
Take one hundred grams of yeast, ten liters of water. Mix it all in a container. Add half a kilogram of bread crumb to the mixture. You can use crackers that have been softened by liquid. Also add half a kilogram of chopped grass to the mixture (do not use quinoa, late blight spores often settle on it), and leave to ferment for a couple of days. At the end of fermentation, dilute the solution with warm water in a ratio of one to ten.
When should you apply fertilizer?
When planning to use yeast nutrition, you need to consider the following factors:
- Season. It is allowed to fertilize plants at the root only when the earth is warm. There is no need to rush the first time; it is recommended to wait until the end of spring or the beginning of summer. During this period, the earth is warmed up, useful elements are completely absorbed. Another important factor is the time of use of fertilizing. It is best to fertilize tomatoes at dawn or dusk, when the sun is not shining too much. If tomatoes grow in a greenhouse, fertilizing should be done in the morning so that the tomatoes dry out before sunset.
- Soil condition. If the open soil is dry, it needs to be slightly moistened before applying fertilizer.
- Dosage. Do not think that yeast fertilizers are generally harmless. An overdose can cause the condition of tomatoes to deteriorate and the yield to decrease.
- Frequency of application. Tomatoes are fertilized with yeast a maximum of three times per season. The product fills the soil with nitrogen elements, but removes potassium and calcium. In view of this, it is advisable to add wood ash to the fertilizer or sprinkle the ash on the beds.
Reviews from gardeners about the use of yeast
The yeast product consists of approximately 60 percent protein elements, which allows it to be effectively used for feeding tomatoes. The extensive experience of Russian gardeners shows that by properly fertilizing tomatoes with yeast, you can improve the general condition of tomatoes and get an excellent harvest.
According to reviews from summer residents, the fertilizer is an excellent combination of low price and high efficiency. In addition, gardeners note that yeast fertilizer is very easy to make.
Summer residents practically do not notice the disadvantages of yeast feeding. It is most effective, according to gardeners, to use yeast to feed tomatoes growing outdoors, since in this case the fertilizer attracts the attention of pollinators.
