This method is optimal for those cases when there is a need to prepare a large number of seedlings for the summer season. But the main thing is that this does not require a lot of free space, which is often in short supply.
Advantages and disadvantages of the method
The classic method of growing tomatoes involves sowing seeds in a container with soil. Often pots, glasses and other products are used for this. But, according to the Kizima method, sowing of seed material is carried out in non-woven material. In this case we are talking about dense polyethylene film. With its help, a small volume of soil is formed, which is enough to grow high-quality seedlings.
The peculiarity of the film container is that it retains moisture, which is so necessary for obtaining strong and healthy sprouts for seedlings.
Galina Aleksandrovna’s method is also called “diaper” or “Moscow style”. This is due to the fact that the residents of this particular city were the first to use the technology. When it came to growing seedlings, many Muscovites faced such a problem as a lack of free space in the apartment. Kizima's method made it possible to easily resolve this issue.
Before planting tomato seeds, you need to carefully study the disadvantages and advantages of the technology. As for the advantages, the author of the technology here draws attention to the following:
- You can place a record number of sprouts on one windowsill without hassle. This allows you to save space, which is often in short supply.
- Picking seedlings is quite easy and quick. To do this, you just need to unfold the “container” and take out the sprout. Subsequently, they are planted in the prepared container.
- You don't need a lot of land to grow seeds. So, for example, to plant one hundred sprouts you need no more than 5 kg of soil.
- This growing method helps protect tomatoes from diseases.This is especially true for blackleg. The chance of its occurrence is reduced to a minimum.
- Transparent containers make it easy to check which seeds have sprouted and which are just about to germinate.
The method from Galina Kizima has many advantages. But, unfortunately, there are several disadvantages here:
- Tomato seedlings do not have enough space for germination. Also, the dense arrangement of “pots” leads to a decrease in natural light. All this leads to the fact that the sprouts grow and develop relatively slowly. Therefore, in order to obtain material in time for planting in open ground at the beginning of the season, it is necessary to sow the seeds in advance.
- As a result of growing seeds in films, the plant has a strong and stable stem, which cannot be said about the root system. Therefore, when planting in unprotected soil, you should take care of strengthening it.
The “Moscow style” method is recommended for cold-resistant plants. This will greatly simplify growing tomato seedlings. Of course, if necessary, it can also be used in the case of heat-loving plants. But, here it is necessary to carry out the picking of the sprouts.
Features of the method
The peculiarity of this technology is that after planting in the soil, tomatoes can grow without water for a long time. Before this, the lower leaves are cut off. Seeds are planted in an oval-shaped hole. It should have such a depth that the sprout goes in halfway. At the same time, about 6 liters of compost, 200 ml of woody vine and a small pinch of potassium permanganate are added to it. All this is mixed directly in the hole and filled with a bucket of water. Tomatoes are planted only after all the water has been completely absorbed.
At the next stage, the seedlings are buried, and their tops are attached to the peg vertically and evenly. All that remains is to pour in one more bucket of water and at this point the planting of tomato seedlings can be considered complete.
Important: The depth of the sprouts should be no more than 5 cm. If you plant the plants deeper, this will lead to their drying out in the future.
Growing methods
Planting tomatoes using Galina Kizima’s method is done in several ways. So, sprouted and unsprouted seeds are used for cultivation. The process can also be carried out on the basis of a substrate. Before sowing tomatoes for seedlings, you need to carefully consider all the proposed options. It is also worth considering Galina’s advice. This will allow you to grow strong and healthy plants.
Using sprouted seeds
This method is used for sowing tomato seeds. In this case, the seed material is prepared in the usual manner. Before sowing, you need to carry out manipulations in this order:
- calibrate;
- disinfected with a special agent;
- soaked in a growth stimulator;
- leave for 3 days for awakening.
The last stage involves immersing the seedling grains in a napkin, which is pre-moistened with warm water. They are placed under a bag for 3 days. When the first loops appear from the seeds, you can start planting them. So, how to grow tomato seedlings:
- even squares with a side of 20 cm made of thick film;
- soil that you prepare yourself or purchase in a store;
- rubber;
- seedling.
The process of planting seeds is carried out in the following sequence:
- Soil in the required quantity is laid out on the corner of the prepared film. The grown tomato seedlings are carefully immersed in it. In this case, the cotyledon leaves should be located above the edge of the film. The root is completely covered with soil.
- The film is folded in the center and rolled into a roll. To maintain its shape, it is fixed with a rubber band.
- All prepared packages are placed in a pallet. It is placed in a well-lit place.
In order not to forget about the planting date, appropriate marks are made on the film with a marker.
Use of dry seeds
To plant, you need to prepare some materials:
- dense polyethylene;
- soil that has the desired composition;
- elastic bands;
- seeds.
The work is carried out in the following sequence:
- Dense polyethylene is cut into strips 10 cm wide.
- The prepared strips are laid out on the workplace. The earth is poured onto them in an even layer. It is thoroughly moistened with water, to which a growth stimulator is added.
- Tomato grains are sown along the strip at a distance of 4 cm from each other.
- Polyethylene is wrapped in a roll and secured with an elastic band.
- A plastic bag is placed on the finished roll. After this, they are placed in a box, which is placed in a warm place.
When the first shoots appear, the bags are removed from the rolls. In this case, the box is moved to a well-lit place. Artificial light sources are also used for lighting.
Substrate use
In this case we are talking about the use of toilet paper. The peculiarity of this material is that it absorbs moisture very well and then releases it easily. This allows you to grow a strong and resilient plant.
To plant, you need to prepare the following materials:
- polyethylene of sufficient density or a substrate for the laminate;
- roll of toilet paper;
- bank rubber band;
- sprouted tomato seeds.
The landing process is carried out in the following sequence:
- Polyethylene is cut into strips 10 cm wide.
- The finished strips are laid out on the table. Strips of paper are laid in three layers and moistened generously. For this, an aqueous solution of a growth stimulator is used.
- Sow tomato seeds on strips of polyethylene at a distance of 4 cm from each other. After this, they are covered with moistened toilet paper. Additionally, the seeds are moistened with a special nutrient liquid.
- At the final stage, rolls are formed. At the same time, it is worth making sure that the seeds do not move. To maintain the shape of the package, it is secured with rubber bands.
Plastic bags are placed on the finished “rolls”. They are then placed in a box, which is placed in a dark and warm place. It is best to place them near the battery. After germination of the seed material, the bags are removed and the tomatoes are moved to a well-lit place.
Some useful tips
To grow tomato seedlings, it is better to use seeds of determinate varieties or hybrids. It is better to sow them at the end of March. Since it will take no more than a month and a half to obtain seedlings, this period is the optimal solution.
Important: Indeterminate varieties of tomatoes are not suitable for this method, since the formation of hands is disrupted during the growth process. As a result, it branches into 2 or 3 sprouts.
During transportation, tomato seedlings experience serious stress. This is especially true for changes in temperature and humidity levels. Therefore, they should first be treated with a small amount of “Healthy Garden” product.This will protect the growing tomato sprout from negative environmental factors, as well as protect it from stress that occurs as a result of their transportation.
Galina insists that seedlings are watered when necessary. First of all, the soil moisture level is determined. To do this, you need to insert your finger into the package. If it remains dry, then the tomatoes need urgent watering.
When growing tomatoes, fertilizing the plants is no less important. For the first time, fertilizers are applied one and a half weeks after picking. For this, it is recommended to use diluted mullein. To prepare the solution, you need to add 1 liter of organic fertilizer concentrate to a bucket of water. It is carefully introduced into the root zone.
