Stinging insects can be a serious threat to people and pets living in the home. Most often, wasps pose a threat, but both wild and domestic bees can settle in residential and non-residential premises. If they cause discomfort or pose a threat to the health and safety of the inhabitants, you will have to figure out how to effectively get rid of bees in the house.
What products are used to control bees?
Before you start fighting bees, you should consider whether it is necessary to do so. These insects are an important part of the ecosystem. They are pollinators, without which nature cannot cope with the formation of a significant part of the harvest, and people will not receive delicious honey and other healing products. If you can’t cope with “peaceful methods,” you need to start fighting them according to all the rules.
It is better to deal with wild bees in early spring. There are still few of them, and they are less dangerous for people. It is better to drive away domestic animals at the end of winter, when they are weakened due to the cold and a long period of inactivity. To destroy dangerous insects, you can use various methods.
Chemicals
It is worth using pesticides if the house and its inhabitants are threatened by wild or African honey bees, which are characterized by increased aggression. Poisoning ordinary, domestic honey bees is possible only as a last resort, if you cannot find a beekeeper who will lure the swarm, or attract a special service. In a critical situation, when insects can bite children or adults, they will have to be poisoned with a suitable poison.
Most often, Dichlorvos aerosol is used for this purpose. This is a radical and effective remedy that quickly kills insects. But before spraying areas of accumulation, you need to take protective measures. By attacking a person in large numbers, insects can cause serious harm to health and sometimes cause death. To prevent dangerous consequences, protective actions must be taken. To do this, use special clothing with long sleeves and trousers, a net to cover the face, a hat, and gloves.
When spraying poison, you need to make sure that it does not get into the eyes, respiratory tract, skin or mucous membranes, and after use you need to change clothes, take a shower and wash your hands and face with soap.
Traps
In order to survive the bees from the attic, you can use special traps. They are cheap and sold in supply stores for summer residents. To enhance the “attractiveness” of traps, you can use substances that are tasty for them, for example, sweets or beer. Traps should be placed near the nest.
When a lot of insects have accumulated in them, you can simply take them away from the house and release them, and destroy the empty nest. This method is suitable if you need to keep valuable honey bees away from your home.
Repellers
If bees fly in from neighboring areas or apiaries, they can be scared away using special devices - repellers. They work on the principle of a fumigator connected to a network, but they do not emit a repellent substance, but ultrasound. Similar devices are used to control rodents and moles. However, the effectiveness of such repellers against bees has not been proven, and the devices themselves are quite expensive, especially if they are intended for outdoor use.
Traditional methods
The following methods are used to control bees:
- Sulfur wick. This device is used by coopers to disinfect kidneys. When burned, the wick releases sulfur dioxide, which poisons insects. They die, and the survivors leave the site.
- Smoke. This is an old method of scaring that has been used since time immemorial. It is also used by beekeepers to fumigate bees with smoke so that they can remove frames of honey or perform any other manipulations with the hive.You can drive them away with smoke from a fire or use a smoker used by beekeepers.
- Traps with drinks that attract insects. They can be made from any bottles and containers. The top is cut off and placed in the lower part in the form of a funnel. A little beer, vinegar or juice, or sweet water is poured down. Traps are placed in places where insects are most numerous. Insects make their way down the neck of the “funnel” to the bait, and can no longer get back out.
- Recordings of birdsong. Bees are afraid of loud noises and birds, some of which prey on them, such as golden bee-eaters. If you put records in places where they accumulate, you can get rid of them without having to destroy them.
You can also use gasoline, which is poured into the nest. But you need to do this carefully, having first protected yourself, and taking into account that this is a dangerous flammable liquid.
How to get rid of bees yourself
It is worth fighting bees on your own if there are few insects or there is firm confidence in the ability to cope with the situation without much risk.
Fighting wild bees
If the bees have not taken up residence in the house or outbuildings and do not threaten the health of the residents in any way, it is better not to touch them. If the swarm nests far in the garden or in the far corner of the plot, then you can simply place traps around the house so that individual insects do not interfere with a calm, peaceful life. In that case, if there are a lot of bees, and they have already bitten someone, there is nothing left to do but drive them away from the area.
Neighborhood bees
It will not be possible to radically get rid of your neighbor’s bees, especially if he does not maintain a distance from the boundaries of someone else’s property when placing the apiary. You need to complain to the relevant authorities about a careless beekeeper, but in the meantime, try to drive away his bees using available methods.
To do this, the area is surrounded by plants whose smell insects do not like. These are lemon balm, mint, lavender, wormwood, lovage, as well as calendula, hellebore (very poisonous!), henbane (very poisonous!), rhododendrons and hot pepper. With the help of plants, you can not only ward off dangerous stinging insects, but also give the area a stylish and impressive look.
You can also distract the bees from the part of the estate adjacent to the residential building. To do this, add sugar to a container of water and place it in the corner farthest from the house. The disadvantage of this method is that the sugar water will have to be constantly renewed.
Earthen
In the case of earth bees, you can do the following: pour at least 5 liters of boiling water into the hole in the evening. You should not save water, as live insects may remain in the nest.
You can also simply dig up the burrows, if they are not located too deep underground, and use chemicals. Before processing, it is worth applying smoke - such protection will prevent insect attacks and make them lethargic.
How to kill bees in a hive
In the event that there is no beekeeper who can remove the swarm from the site, or the bees have settled firmly in the house in an inaccessible place, they will have to be destroyed. On the street, the nest can be doused with flammable liquid and burned.
If the bees have settled in the hive, it is necessary to prepare a poison for them, pour it into a plastic bag, which is put on the hive, tied tightly and left to act. Then the package with the hive is destroyed. You can also use gasoline, kerosene, bleach and other chemicals for this.
