How to properly pick small tobacco plants at home

Cigarettes have become much more expensive today, and the tobacco in them is not of very good quality. Many of those who were unable to quit smoking try to grow their own tobacco. The crop is grown in dachas, loggias and even in apartments, so gardeners will benefit from knowledge about its characteristics. How to pick small tobacco plants is the topic of today's conversation.

What is picking

Picking is the transplantation of small sprouts that have appeared into other containers; this allows the lateral roots to grow better and obtain stronger and more viable seedlings.

Small tobacco seeds are difficult to plant one at a time; seedlings are frequent, and without picking, the sprouts will not develop. When the plants produce 2-3 true leaves, they are transplanted into separate cups and grown before planting in a permanent place.

How long does it take for tobacco to sprout after sowing?

The seeds of the crop are sown from February to April. The period depends on temperature indicators in the region. Tobacco is sown 35-55 days before planting in open ground. Seed germination depends on:

  • on ambient temperature;
  • quality of seed material;
  • amount of light;
  • plant varieties.

From planting to the appearance of sprouts, it takes from 5 days to 3 weeks. The seeds are not buried in the soil, leaving them on the surface of the soil; the container with soil is covered with glass or film, creating a greenhouse.

How to pick smoking tobacco

First, prepare containers for seedlings. It is convenient to grow it at home in disposable plastic cups. Holes are made in the bottom of the dish to drain excess moisture.

Important: tobacco has extremely sensitive roots; the soil with the sprouts is watered abundantly to make it easier to remove the plants.

The soil prepared for picking plants is calcined to protect the sprouts from fungal and bacterial infections. Fill the cups with cooled soil and water the soil with warm (settled or rain) water. Holes are made in the ground.

Expert:
The plants are removed from the common seedling container and distributed into cups. It is enough to place 2-3 sprouts in each. The seedlings are watered again and removed for 3-5 days in a dark place. During this time, the sprouts take root and get used to new conditions. Then the containers with tobacco are transferred to a well-lit room.

When planting crops in open ground, choose sunny areas.Beds with tobacco protect the plantings located around them from pests; tobacco dust is used to protect against aphids, various types of flies (onion, carrot), cruciferous flea beetle.
