Why guinea fowl scream and what to do to make them stop, reasons for behavior

Guinea fowl are considered promising birds for home keeping. They have delicious meat and eggs, which are twice as healthy as chicken eggs. These birds are undemanding in terms of care, feed on their own in the warm season, destroy pests in the garden, rarely get sick and get along well with other household inhabitants. Why is it that not every farmer dares to keep them? The point is the harsh and unpleasant voice of the birds. Why do guinea fowls constantly scream?

Why do guinea fowls scream?

These close relatives of domestic chickens are considered a naturally noisy species. In the wild, birds emit a characteristic nasty call to communicate with each other, in case of fright, or as a signal that food has been found. After all, all individuals feed together.

For a farmer living in a private house, guinea fowl can become a real problem. Few neighbors will enjoy the heart-rending scream of birds, which sometimes does not subside even at night. The sound of one bird is reminiscent of the noise of a whole flock of rooks, but what if there are 10 or more such “singers” on the farm? Screaming is a normal condition for guinea fowl. This is how birds tell each other about their location. And for the owner, this behavior is a signal that the birds are well-fed, healthy and happy with everything.

Expert:
Guinea fowl begin to bawler when they reach sexual maturity (18-22 months), young animals behave relatively quieter: they squeak and coo.

What to do if birds scream non-stop?

When the screaming of specific pets begins to annoy you too much, it’s time to think about why this is happening. And how to eliminate unpleasant noise.

Unnatural causes of screaming:

  1. Something is frightening the birds. Perhaps the guinea fowl are adjacent to something or someone that is driving them into panic. In this case, it is better to move the motley family to a new place.
  2. They don't have enough space. Guinea fowl, accustomed to free range, will be indignant if they find themselves in a cramped enclosure. The solution is to let the birds graze more. Even if some fly away, it’s not a big deal; in a couple of days the Gulen will return home.
  3. Little food. In winter, when birds are not able to feed on their own, they will have competition for food. Naturally, the hungriest ones will scream so much that they will eventually rouse the entire flock.

If there are no obvious reasons, and the guinea fowl scream day and night, then you can try to drown out the brawlers in two ways:

  1. Keep them in a soundproofed shed. However, not everyone can afford to equip a utility room like this.
  2. In the summer, fence off a separate area for birds so that they have enough space, but there is no opportunity to fly away: cover a plot of land of 20-30 square meters with nylon, netting over trees and bushes. Guinea fowl should feel safe and graze there.
