The characteristics of the narcissus variety Chirfulness indicate many advantages. The flowers are unpretentious and can be grown on any plot of land. In order for an ornamental plant to delight with its unusual flowering and pleasant aroma, planting should be done correctly. Care consists of timely watering, adding nutrients and mandatory shelter for the winter.
Description of the flower
Garden daffodils belong to the Amaryllis family.There are more than 60 species of this ornamental plant. The Chirfulness variety belongs to the terry species of narcissus:
- The stem grows up to 46 cm in height.
- Several flowers are formed on one strong stem at once.
- Flowering begins at the end of April and continues for three weeks.
- After flowering, the greenery lasts for another month and dies off by mid-July.
- The bulb remains in the soil, which continues to accumulate nutritional components for further development.
The daffodil bulb can tolerate drought and frost, but in cold regions it requires additional shelter for the winter.
What does it look like?
The diameter of each flower reaches 8 cm. The outer petals are large, oblong-elongated. The inner petals are smaller, their edges curl outward.
White subspecies
Characteristics of Narcissus White Chirfulness:
- several lacy flowers are formed on one stem up to 40 cm high;
- the inflorescences of the white subspecies of narcissus variety Chirfulness are large, up to 6 cm in diameter;
- petals are white, the core is yellow;
- the inner petals resemble the bud of an unopened rose;
- a pleasant, musky aroma is perceptible from a great distance.
Yellow subspecies
The narcissus variety Yellow Cheerfulness has the following characteristics:
- double flowers are pale yellow;
- the outer petals are large, blooming in different directions;
- the inner petals are smaller and remain curled in the center;
- inflorescence diameter 6 cm;
- on one strong peduncle there are from two to five flowers;
- flowering begins at the end of April and continues for three weeks.
Features of the plant
Terry daffodil Chirfulness has proven itself from the best side:
- withstands frost and short-term lack of moisture;
- the flower is resistant to many diseases;
- the plant is unpretentious to the composition of the soil, the main thing is that it is well drained and not characterized by high acidity.
Specifics of care
Daffodils are unpretentious plants, but you should still follow some rules:
- Regular watering is required;
- regular loosening of the soil and weeding;
- adding additional fertilizers;
- winter shelter with dry leaves, straw or pine branches.
Landing
Any plot of land is suitable for planting. But if you plant it in a level place that is well lit, the plant’s resistance to infections increases and lush flowering occurs.
Loamy soil composition, with a high content of humus and neutral acidity, is better suited. Groundwater should not pass close to the soil surface.
Planting is done in late August or early September:
- dig holes at a distance of 11 cm and a depth of 15 cm;
- river sand is poured onto the bottom to improve the drainage properties of the soil;
- Place an onion in each hole and cover it with earth;
- then the ground is mulched with sawdust and straw (the thickness of the mulch is 3.5 cm).
It takes two weeks for the bulbs to root. Therefore, bulbs planted later than the recommended dates, but before the onset of frost, will survive. In this case, flowering may begin after a season. The bulbs can be planted in the spring, but they must first be kept in the refrigerator for two months.
Daffodils can grow in the same place for more than 10 years. But since the soil is quickly depleted, the location is changed more often.
Forcing flowers
Flowers can be grown not only in a summer cottage, but also at home. Off-season flowering is easy to obtain. If you follow the rules, then abundant cutting of the Chirfulness bouquet variety begins at the beginning of winter.
To get flowers in December, the bulbs are dug up two weeks earlier than usual. It is recommended to grow cut daffodils in boxes or in greenhouse beds:
- Among the dug up bulbs, the largest and healthiest specimens are selected. Bulbs weighing up to 92 g with two or three tips are suitable.
- At first, planting material should be stored at a temperature of +18 degrees, then the temperature is gradually reduced to 8 degrees.
- Before planting, the bulbs are disinfected with a solution of potassium permanganate; they can be soaked in a solution with Fitosporin or Trichodermin.
- Additionally, the bulbs are treated with growth stimulants (Epin, Zircon).
In early October, the bulbs are planted in prepared soil. In November they are covered with film. A month before flowering, the plant is transferred to a well-lit place where the air temperature is +17 degrees. Watering is carried out at this time every day.
Fertilizer
The first fertilizing with mineral compounds is carried out in early spring. When loosening the soil, ammonium nitrate, superphosphate and potassium salt are added. It is recommended to carry out the second feeding during the period of bud formation.
If the weather is rainy at the time of planting, then nitrogen components are added (nitrophoska is suitable). Fertilizers are also applied in the spring, after the snow melts.
Care after flowering
After the end of the flowering period, daffodils Chirfulness requires frequent watering. The bulb will accumulate moisture necessary for the development of the future flower primordium. It is recommended to water the flowers once every 7 days.
For the winter, the bulbs are protected from frost. The procedure begins after sub-zero temperatures are established. Litter peat is used as a covering material.The insulation layer is removed only after the snow has completely melted.
Is the flower susceptible to diseases?
Narcissus variety Chirfulness rarely gets sick and is attacked by pests. But if planting rules and other agrotechnical practices are not followed, problems may arise:
- The most common is fusarium.
- When planting in a damp area with heavy soil, there is a high probability of developing gray rot. The disease is also provoked by cold weather, excess nitrogen or lack of potassium.
- Another common disease is penicillium rot.
Pests that pose a danger to daffodils include daffodil flies, root mites, wireworms, cutworm caterpillars, and nematodes.
Before flowering begins, preventive treatment is carried out with suitable insecticides (be sure to follow the dosage). After flowering, daffodils are treated with copper sulfate or a preparation such as "Hom".
Possible problems during cultivation
Narcissus Chirfulness tolerates frosts in winter down to -17 degrees. If the temperature drops lower or there is little snow, then additional covering of the bulbs or completely digging them out of the ground is required. Straw, pine or spruce branches are used as shelter.
The flower does not have any special requirements for fertilizers. If the plant grows slowly, the leaves turn yellow and dry, and the flowers are small in diameter, these may be signs of micronutrient deficiency.
Use in landscape design
The narcissus variety Chirfullens has an unusual, large inflorescence and a pleasant aroma. There are many options for choosing places to plant narcissus bulbs:
- effective planting in perennial flower beds;
- the flower looks great in the lawn along with other types of spring flowers;
- You can plant the plant along the borders or fence;
- decorate the yard with hanging pots and flowerpots;
- growing in flower pots in an apartment is common;
- Flowers look beautiful in alpine slides.
Daffodils look good combined with tulips, hyacinths and other perennial flowers and shrubs.
