Description and characteristics of rose Pat Austin
English park rose Pat Austin was bred in 1995 and inherited the characteristics of two famous varieties - Graham Thomas and Abraham Darby. The variety is valued for its original color. The inner side of the petals is bright yellow and looks harmonious with the delicate copper back side. As the flowers grow, the color changes to coral or cream.
The bushes are spreading, up to 1 m high. Large leaves of rich green color grow on the stems. Flowers can form singly, but more often they are collected in clusters of 3-5 pieces. The shoots are thin and often bend towards the ground.
Main positive and negative aspects
When planning to plant roses, it is recommended to familiarize yourself with the pros and cons of the chosen variety in advance. The Pat Austin variety has the following advantages:
- attractive appearance and pronounced aroma;
- repeated flowering throughout the season, subject to proper care;
- frost resistance.
The main disadvantage is the rapid aging of roses when exposed to high temperatures, which is why the flowers do not have time to fully bloom. Another minor drawback is that Pat Austin roses are not suitable for cutting, since the shoots do not withstand large flowers well, and the petals quickly fall off.
Subtleties of cultivation
In order for the plantings to grow actively and bloom on time, a number of growing features must be observed. For the Pat Austin variety, the place and period of planting, the condition of the seedling, the type of soil, preliminary preparation and direct planting technology are important.
In what form is planting carried out?
Seedlings that have managed to form dense roots are placed on the garden plot. Also, seedlings should have 2-3 stems about 20 cm high, with green buds.
Boarding time
It is best to plant Pat Austin roses in the spring, after the risk of return frost has passed, but before the onset of warm weather. As a rule, the optimal planting time is the second half of April. The advantage of spring planting is that the plantings will have time to adapt to new conditions and will have time to grow greatly during the warm period.
Selecting a location
The Pat Austin variety does not tolerate hot climates well, so the flowers should be placed in a shaded place where the sun's rays reach them for several hours a day, preferably in the first half of the day. Placing it in a constantly illuminated area will lead to the occurrence of many diseases and the formation of small buds. If there is no suitable place in the garden area, you can create a shelter that casts a shadow yourself.
How to prepare the soil and flower for planting
The hole for placing the seedling is prepared a couple of weeks before planting so that the soil has time to settle. A suitable pit depth is 60-70 cm. Such dimensions are necessary due to further growth of roots. The filling of the hole depends on the type of soil:
- Heavy soil is diluted with sand and organic matter. Organic matter includes compost, manure, and wood ash.
- Soil with a high sand content is mixed with organic matter and clay.
- If there was previously a flower garden on the ground, you will have to completely change the soil mixture, since it will not contain the necessary nutritional components.
Before transferring to a permanent place, the seedling is soaked in a root formation stimulator, which helps it take root better. It is enough to place the seedling in the solution for 3-4 hours.
Boarding procedure
The seedling is placed in the prepared hole, the roots are straightened in different directions and sprinkled with soil mixture. The soil around the seedling is carefully compacted by hand, watered abundantly and covered with a layer of mulch.
Further care of the plant
Pat Austin roses require constant comprehensive care. The implementation of basic agrotechnical practices contributes to the active development of plantings and the preservation of decorative characteristics.
Watering rules and humidity
Park rose bushes are moistened as the soil dries. To check, you can take a lump of earth from the top layer in your hand - if it crumbles, another watering is required. As a rule, with average rainfall, it is enough to water the plants once every 5-7 days. Each bush uses about 15 liters of warm, settled water.
Fertilizing and soil quality
Throughout the season, flowers must receive the required amount of nutritional components. To ensure strong rose shoots, special attention should be paid to autumn feeding, when plants need phosphorus and potassium. It is allowed to carry out 3 feedings with an interval of 2-3 weeks, subject to warm weather.
The Pat Austin variety also needs foliar feeding. It is advisable to apply them every couple of weeks using a complex fertilizer. It is recommended to add humates, chelate complex, Zircon and Epin to the fertilizer composition.
Pruning and replanting
To give shape to the plantings and grow a spreading bush with dense branches, light pruning is carried out in the spring. The weakest and frozen shoots are removed from the plants. If the goal is to grow a compact bush with a large number of flowers, it is pruned by 2/3.
To transplant roses, they are carefully dug up around the perimeter of the crown of the bush. When extracting flowers, grab a large ball of earth to protect the roots.
The roses are transferred to a new hole, covered with earth and watered.
Rose blossom
The flowering period of Pat Austin roses lasts from May to October. The buds are formed in abundance, but the flowers bloom gradually. Fertilizing with nitrogen-containing substances in early summer allows you to maintain flowering.
Methods of controlling diseases and pests
Insufficiently high immunity of Pat Austin roses often leads to black spot, powdery mildew and gray mold. As a measure to combat diseases, they are treated with special fungicidal preparations.
Among the parasites that pose a danger to roses are spider mites and aphids. You can repel pests with the help of insecticides and spraying the bushes with a soap solution.
Affected and fallen leaves should be raked and burned so as not to attract even more insects.
Plant propagation
The easiest way to propagate roses is to divide the bush. The separated parts are planted, following standard rules, in pre-prepared pits with fertilizers. After a year, the cuttings form full-fledged bushes, endowed with the qualities inherent in the Pat Austin variety.
Application in garden design
The rich and original color of the petals allows you to diversify the landscape design of any garden plot. Shade tolerance opens up the possibility of planting in places where other flowers would wither.
Pat Austin roses look good in compact hedges or as a contrast against green spaces.
