Dill Salut, which belongs to the annual herbs, was bred in the nineties of the last century by Russian breeders. Thanks to its pleasant smell, the leaves and seeds of the umbrella plant were used as a seasoning back in Ancient Egypt and Rome. Decoctions of aromatic herbs eliminated diarrhea, treated neuroses, eczema, eye and women's diseases. Dill water is still given to babies to drink when they have a bloated stomach.
Salute is one of the best representatives of the family, adapted for growing in fields, small areas, and indoors.
Description of the variety
During the growing season of dill Salut, a powerful bush is formed with thick, feathery, dark green leaves covered with a purine coating. They are arranged vertically; there are up to 30 pieces in one outlet. The length of the petiole grows up to 16 cm, the height of the stem, which has longitudinal stripes, reaches 1 meter.
About 200 g of juicy greenery with a pleasant smell is cut from one bush. At the end of the growing season, a rosette is formed where seeds ripen, which are characterized by:
- round shape;
- light brown color;
- slight thickness.
The leaves of late-ripening Salyut are cut off for greenery; 45 days after that, shoots will emerge from the ground. In unfavorable weather, dill ripens later. Up to 4.8 kg of aromatic grass is collected from a square meter of plot in several steps.
Growing
Fireworks produce a decent harvest both in greenhouses and in summer cottages. The variety thrives on light and fertile soils and does not tolerate acidic soil. They grow green crops where there is a lot of sun; they will not grow in the shade.
Sowing dates
It is easy to collect material for planting from the self-pollinating dill Salut. From one bush you get up to 8 g of flattened grains with a pronounced smell, which germinate only in the first year. For the late-ripening variety, 2 sowing dates are used - May or the last days of August, all of September. Dill sproutswhen the air temperature rises above 8 degrees. Greens are cut in June, umbrellas - at the end of summer.
Soil preparation
In order for a spicy crop to please you with a harvest, you need fertile land. The plant responds well to organic matter. You should not add lime or ash to the soil chosen for planting Salyut, otherwise the leaves will turn red.
Before sowing, the soil is fed.
- mullein (liter per bucket of water);
- liquid fertilizer Biud;
- a mixture of humus with the drug Rastvorin and nitrophoska;
- universal remedy Kemira.
It is enough to select one of these organic substances, and not use them all at the same time. The dill bed is dug where the rays of the sun fall all day; the aromatic herb does not take root in the shade.
Seed preparation
Salute, like others dill varieties, does not germinate well because the flattened grains contain essential oils. The problem can be solved not in one way, but in several:
- The seeds are washed in warm water and left for a day to swell.
- Soak for 4 hours, after which they are dipped into a container with a solution of potassium permanganate.
- Soak in ash infusion for 2 days.
- After warming up and disinfection, they are treated with a growth stimulator.
Disinfecting the seed in water at a temperature of 50 degrees helps improve the germination of grass. After the procedure, the duration of which should not exceed 15 minutes, the grains are transferred to a solution prepared from an Immunocytophyte tablet.
Sowing
Dill of the Salut variety is planted in the ground in a continuous manner; the planting depth should not exceed 2 mm. For one linear meter of plot, about 30 seeds are used, which are placed in a wide furrow, the distance between each furrow is up to 12 cm. Soil is poured on top.
Features of care
Although the spicy crop is an unpretentious plant, this does not mean that no work is required after sowing. To harvest an excellent harvest of greenery, you need to fight weeds, loosen the soil, and water.
Weeding
Dense soil has poor air flow, moisture stagnates, and dill receives insufficient nutrients and develops slowly.In order for greenery to grow well, the soil must be loosened after each rain or irrigation.
Weeds choke out cultivated plants; they need to be pulled out by the roots several times a season.
Watering
When the soil dries out, which happens in extreme heat, the dill leaves begin to wither and the bushes stop growing. It is necessary to ensure that there is enough moisture in the soil, however, the plant cannot be watered too much, otherwise the taste and smell of dill will deteriorate.
Top dressing
The soil is fertilized only before sowing; this should not be done during the Salyut growing season. It is not recommended to spray fungicides on the leaves as they are used for cooking throughout the summer. If dill grows slowly, it is fed with urea and nitrophoska.
Advantages disadvantages
The Salut variety is liked by summer residents and gardeners because it gives a good harvest, the leaves grow quickly after cutting, and umbrellas form only towards the end of summer. The advantages of the variety include:
- excellent taste and aroma;
- disease resistance;
- possibility of long-term use of greenery.
The herb normally tolerates light frosts and sudden weather fluctuations. Thanks to these features, the variety quickly became popular among gardeners.
Pests and diseases
With dense plantings and high humidity in closed ground, the roots of dill rot and the leaves wither. The grass is affected by blackleg, fungal spores, and bacteria.
When growing crops in the garden, blind bugs and Italian bugs attack. Insects and larvae love dill and suck the juice out of it. The Salut variety suffers from wireworms, coriander seed eaters, and aphids.
Greens are not treated with fungicides. Insects are collected by hand and folk remedies are used.Crop rotation helps to avoid pests.
Collection and storage of dill
Spicy grass for greens is cut starting in June, when the stem grows up to 12 cm in height. Both leaves and seeds are placed in salads, soups, fish and meat dishes.
For long-term storage, greens are dried, salted, and canned. When fermenting cabbage and preparing marinade for tomatoes, cucumbers, and peppers, the inflorescences along with the stems are used.
