The Victor grape variety is considered famous and popular. It turned out thanks to the amateur work of one famous breeder. The result of the activity is the beautiful appearance and commercial quality of the berries. Victor grapes are used to grow fruits for sale and in households. Among the quick-ripening varieties, Victor is considered the best.
History of selection
This grape variety was developed by amateur V.N. Krainov, living in the city of Novocherkassk. Those around him called him a “private breeder.”In fact, he did not work in educational institutions or special laboratories; he created new varieties of plants in his favorite garden. The hobbyist began breeding new types of grapes in 1995.
Name V.N. Krainova is immortalized in his varieties Victor and Victor-2. The scientist obtained new species by crossing the varieties Talisman and Kishmish Radiant. As a result, the Victor variety was obtained. Victor-2 is similar in appearance, its second name is Sympathy.
Description of Victor grapes
In order to understand what a shrub looks like, you need to consider its description in detail:
- Pollinated by bisexual flowers.
- It forms stepsons on which the harvest appears.
- The ripening of the vine occurs at 2/3. This phenomenon is considered favorable.
Fruiting depends on proper care of the bush.
Characteristics of the variety
The grape bunches are large and conical in shape. I would like to pay special attention to the characteristics of the berries in order to understand the uniqueness of the grapes:
- the weight of an average-sized grape bunch varies from 0.5 to 1 kilogram;
- when harvesting, 6-8 kilograms of juicy, tasty grapes are removed from one bush;
- no fruit peas. The berries are large in size, each weighing from 15 to 19 grams. The shape is oval, with a slightly pointed end. In appearance, this variety can be confused with lady fingers;
- the size of the berries can be from 3.5 to 6 centimeters;
- Seeds develop inside each fruit, but there are very few of them (1-2 pieces);
- the color of the grapes depends on the time spent in direct sunlight: pink, dark red, purple;
- the taste is excellent. The pulp is fleshy and rich, the skin is thin (not felt during consumption);
- presence of sugar – 17%, acid – up to 8 g/l.
Advantages and disadvantages
The advantages of the variety are:
- There is no pea.
- Stable, regular fruiting.
- The ripening of the vine occurs at 2/3.
- Harvesting is possible early.
- Rooting of cuttings is good, adaptation to climatic conditions is rapid.
- Able to survive at low temperatures. Withstands frosts down to -23 degrees.
The negative aspects of the variety include:
- attractiveness to insects during early flowering;
- the risk of damage to the ovary by late frosts increases.
Landing Features
Planting of seedlings in the ground is carried out in the 3rd decade of April. There is no snow at this time. The site must be chosen on the sunny side, without cold wind and drafts. It is worth remembering that an adult shrub requires an area of at least 6 square meters. It is worth leaving 5 meters of free soil between seedlings.
Highlands and hills are considered favorable places. Cold air does not linger in such places.
The soil should be light, well permeable to liquid, and not swampy. Excessive humidity adversely affects the root system of grapes.
Let's look at the step-by-step steps for properly planting a seedling:
- 20 days before the intended planting of the shrub, dig a hole. This is required so that the earth has time to settle. Size: 80*80*80 centimeters.
- Fill 1/3 with organic fertilizers, and also add potassium salt, nitrogen and superphosphate. Fill the hole with about 10 centimeters of regular soil on top. This action will help avoid burning the root system, and at the same time the seedling will receive nutrients from the soil in a timely manner.
- Plant the shrub so as not to bury the root collar.Trample the soil. Water generously and mulch with sawdust or moss to retain moisture for a longer period of time.
Care Tips
In order for Victor grapes to grow and bear fruit, it is important to properly care for:
- pruning When the vine is still small, it is recommended to pinch it to properly form the bush. As soon as it has grown to 170 centimeters, pinch it. Regular pruning of excess shoots will help increase productivity. To quickly ripen the fruits, it is worth trimming the leaves around the bunches, so they will receive more sunlight. The fruiting vine is pruned short (4 buds are removed) or long (up to 10 buds). It is not recommended to overload the plant, otherwise the bush will not be able to bear fruit;
- It is recommended to feed in the first half of summer, preferably several times. You can buy fertilizer in a specialized store or make it yourself at home. In the latter case, the following components must be combined in a large container: wood ash (50 grams), water (10 liters), cow manure (2 kilograms), superphosphate (30 grams). Stir - the fertilizer is ready. It is recommended to fertilize after harvest;
- Watering should be carried out promptly and abundantly. Avoid over-wetting or drying out the soil. Foliage, moss, and spruce branches will help maintain soil moisture.
Reproduction of the variety
Victor grapes propagate in 4 ways:
- Saplings.
- Grafting cuttings.
- By layering.
- Bones.
Regardless of the chosen method, the grapes take root well, maintaining their properties. When grafting with cuttings, it is worth remembering that the result may be a hybrid plant that retains the properties of the mother bush and Victor’s grapes.When using seeds, you need to be patient, as it will take a lot of time for the first berries to appear on the bush.
Diseases and pests
Victor grapes are resistant to fungal and pathogenic microorganisms. Despite this, the bushes need to be processed and protected.
Treatment is carried out before flowering and during the formation of berries.
