The Teremok apple tree is not particularly frost-resistant, but has managed to gain wide popularity among amateurs and professional gardeners. Beautiful large fruits with excellent taste, as well as low maintenance requirements, have made it a real favorite in some regions.
Description of the Teremok apple tree
The Teremok variety of apple trees allows you to harvest fruits just in time for the beginning of autumn. A tree of medium height with a flat-round crown.The crown is not prone to thickening, but the main branches are located quite widely in relation to the trunk. Fruits are formed on ringlets or annual growths. Flowering is abundant and occurs in mid-May. The variety is partially self-fertile, but in the presence of pollinators nearby, the yield increases several times. Teremok is a fast-growing variety; on a medium-sized rootstock it begins to bear fruit already in the third year after planting. An adult tree produces 40-50 kg of high quality harvest.
The weight of one apple reaches 200 grams. The shape of the fruit is conical, the symmetry is slightly broken. The color of the skin is distinguished by a beautiful red-orange blush located around the entire perimeter of the fruit.
The harvested crop is suitable for transportation over long distances. It is consumed fresh and used to make juices.
The Teremok apple tree does not require special care measures, but responds gratefully to the following activities:
- moderate feeding;
- regular watering;
- pest prevention;
- processing of the tree trunk circle;
- sanitary pruning;
- crown molding;
- preventive measures to protect wood from rodents.
When these activities are carried out, the Teremok apple tree will delight you with an abundant harvest of fruits that will fully correspond to their varietal characteristics.
Breeding history
The Teremok apple tree variety is the result of many years of work by domestic scientists, employees of the Institute of Horticulture of the UAAS. The tree was obtained by crossing the well-known hybrid with excellent characteristics 25/2-D and the no less popular Grieve Rouge variety. In 1999, this variety was presented to the attention of gardeners in Polesie and the forest-steppe zone of Ukraine, where it began to be successfully cultivated.
Additional characteristics of the variety
Teremok has a lot of positive characteristics that set it apart from its competitors:
- precociousness;
- excellent commercial quality;
- increased resistance to fungal diseases;
- excellent taste;
- suitability for transportation.
No significant deficiencies were identified in the variety. Reviews from gardeners indicate that Teremok does not have increased frost resistance and cannot be grown in regions with harsh climatic conditions.
Dimensions of an adult tree
Teremok is a medium-sized variety of apple tree, so its maximum height reaches 5 meters. On the rootstock this figure does not exceed 3 meters. The tree grows quickly and tends to lose its main conductor, so its lower branches hang down a little.
The annual increase is estimated as average.
Frequency of fruiting and yield
Apple trees of the Teremok variety bear fruit consistently, every year. Upon reaching the age of five, the tree can produce a harvest of 12 kg. From an adult plant, up to 60 kg of fruits with high commercial and taste qualities are collected. The harvest lasts from early to mid-September. In storage, apples do not lose their marketability and taste for a month, and in the refrigerator - three times longer. It is important that the fruits do not become overripe. Otherwise, they will retain their external characteristics, but the structure of the pulp and taste will be spoiled.
Fruit evaluation
The pulp of Teremok apples is very tender, tasty, juicy, and has a pleasant, but not strong aroma. In cross section it has a beautiful yellowish color. The taste of apples is sweet and sour; tasters rated it 4.2-4.5 points. The fruits are great for making apple wine.
Winter hardiness
The description of the Teremok apple tree variety indicates its good winter hardiness. However, in some regions, with a strong and prolonged drop in temperature, the tree freezes. This is evidenced by reviews from practicing gardeners who personally grew this variety of apples on their plots.
Diseases and pests
The Teremok variety apple tree exhibits increased resistance to scab and powdery mildew. But it often becomes a treat for the following insects and pests:
- apple sucker;
- apple aphid;
- hawthorn;
- codling moth;
- apple blossom beetle
The apple tree is sometimes affected by the following diseases:
- fruit rot;
- black cancer;
- rust.
To prevent troubles and protect the future harvest, preventive measures should be carried out in a timely manner, the tree trunk should be whitened with slaked lime, and the apple tree should be treated with Bordeaux mixture. In adverse weather conditions such measures are extremely important.
If signs of any disease or pest influence are noticed, apple trees are sprayed with special-purpose preparations, treated with insecticides or fungicides. If individual parts of the tree are severely damaged, they are immediately removed and burned.
Best region for growing
The Teremok variety apple tree is suitable for growing in the climatic conditions of the middle zone. In this case, it is better to give preference to clonal rootstocks, which can not only produce an earlier harvest, but also limit the height of the plant. Most often, gardeners choose medium-sized or dwarf varieties.
Teremok apple trees are grown in Polesie, the forest-steppe zone of Ukraine, as well as in the Republic of Belarus.
