Garlic Bogatyr is named so because of its impressive size. The head can reach 75–85 g, while there are bulbs whose weight is about 115 g. 7–8 large teeth grow on the head. They are easy to plant and unpretentious in care, so they are suitable for cultivation by both experienced and novice gardeners.
Characteristics of the species
Winter garlic Bogatyr is an annual plant, therefore, for excellent reproduction, planting should be carried out annually. The shoot plant reproduces by teeth and bulbs, which are formed in the shoots. The flower is sterile and does not take part in the reproduction process.
Stems and leaves
The presented variety has two types of leaves. Their characteristics are as follows:
- Upper - above the ground. They perform an assimilating function and absorb substances necessary for growth.
- The scales of the cloves are a modified upper leaf, in which the assimilating function has been replaced by a protective one. The scales protect the teeth from external influences.
8–10 leaves grow on one stem, the width of which is 1–2 cm, the length is 20–60 cm. They grow alternately, after the lower ones have appeared, the remaining leaves sprout from the inside. The result is a false stem with an arrow inside. Due to this, the leaves, when ripe and reaching maximum growth, do not fall down.
The ripening of the bulb is observed by yellowing leaves. Gradual yellowing begins from bottom to top. The distinctive features of ripe garlic are dry and thin leaves at the base of the stem, with an acquired white color.
At the bottom of the stem is the head of garlic - the bottom of a complex bulb. The teeth are fixed on top. There is a long flower arrow in the center of the plant. After the tip begins to curl, the arrow is trimmed for use in cooking or for further planting. In the second option, aerial bulbs are planted in the same way as cloves.
Roots and bulb
The garlic bulb weighs up to 85 g, with 5–7 cloves, and has a rounded-flat shape. The function of the complex bulb is to store nutrients, and it is also an organ of vegetative propagation.
There are teeth around the arrow, the head is covered with several thin scales. The fleshy scales that cover the cloves are purple in color and turn brown after drying.The teeth are rich in essential oils, have a persistent aroma, are crispy and quite spicy. They are used for preparing various dishes, canning, and can also be eaten fresh. During storage, they are resistant to nematodes.
Bogatyr varieties have fibrous rhizomes, which, despite this, are quite strong. It is located at the base of the bottom and diverges to the sides, dimensions - 50 cm in width. When harvesting, the rhizome, as a rule, has not yet completely dried, so the garlic is slightly undermined.
Planting and productivity level
In order to obtain a good harvest, planting teeth should be selected in the largest sizes. If you take small ones, the harvest will become smaller every year.
For storage, you should choose a dry place so that the garlic does not become damp or rot. The choice of landing site is important. The best would be the land on which zucchini, carrots, potatoes and cucumbers were previously planted.
Landing dates
Garlic of the Bogatyr variety is winter; the description states that planting should be done in late autumn, 30–40 days before the first frost. If planting is done late, the garlic rots in the ground before it has time to take root.
If you plant the planting material too early, the teeth will sprout and subsequently freeze in the winter cold.
When planted in a timely manner, the cloves sprout and take root. It is also possible to plant in the spring, in which case the bulb will have one tooth. A large onion is taken for the next planting, which will subsequently produce an onion with 5–7 cloves. This method is used to improve the fertility and size of the bulbs of subsequent harvests.
Landing Features
For a good harvest, follow the following recommendations for planting Bogatyr:
- the clove is immersed in the ground 10–12 cm from the bottom;
- the gap between the teeth is 16-18 cm;
- it is important to fertilize the soil with manure before planting;
- rows are made with a distance of 45 cm;
- With the onset of the first frost, mulching is done.
In the spring and before harvesting, regular watering, fertilizing and loosening the soil is important. Removing weeds - as needed.
