Numerous synthetic preparations help gardeners and gardeners effectively protect green plantings and beds from dangerous diseases and harmful insects. Thanks to a special substance - piperonyl butoxide, manufacturers enhance the effect of the main components. The main advantage is that even with short-term exposure to drugs containing PPB, the working effect lasts for a long period.
Physicochemical characteristics
Piperonyl butoxide is a synergistic substance that enhances the toxicity of other elements while remaining non-toxic. Piperonyl butoxide has the following characteristics:
- oily liquid, color may vary from yellow to brown;
- does not dissolve in water;
- boiling point – 180 °C.
The substance quickly decomposes in light. Organic solvents can be used to prepare solutions.
Effect on insects
As a synergist, piperonyl butoxide is used in the production of pyrethroids (synthetic insecticides used to kill harmful insects).
The addition of PPB (in proportions 1:10, 1:5) leads to a 2-4 times increase in the rate of paralysis in cockroaches. Thanks to the synergist, the active poison penetrates faster through the cuticle of arthropod pests. It is also necessary to take into account other routes of penetration of the substance: by inhalation in the case of using aerosols, or by ingestion.
Instructions for use
Piperonyl butoxide complements the composition of more than 1,500 products used in everyday life or agriculture.
Mixtures
Most often, the substance is added as a synergist to insecticide preparations produced on the basis of pyrethroid formulations (the composition includes active and auxiliary substances).
Antagonism
Notably, PPB can exhibit negative effects on compounds. An antagonistic effect occurs when added to the following drugs: Diazinon, Fipronil, Imidacloprid, Chlorpyrifos.
Toxicity and precautions
The substance is classified as moderately hazardous. To prevent possible poisoning, the following precautions are taken:
- storage rooms are equipped with ventilation;
- when spraying, use protective gloves and eye protection;
- Do not smoke, drink or eat while working.
PPB is considered low-toxic and, with a single contact with the skin, does not cause significant harm. But it is recommended to wash the skin area with running water. If swallowed, may cause vomiting and diarrhea.
As first aid, it is recommended to rinse your mouth and drink a couple of glasses of clean water. There is no irritating effect on the mucous membrane upon contact with the eyes. But it is advisable to immediately wash your face with clean water, rinsing your eyes well. Also, when using preparations, you need to take into account the flammable quality of PPB; use carbon dioxide, foam or powder to extinguish the fire.
To obtain a voluminous harvest, it is necessary to provide plant crops with decent care. Numerous drugs help fight not only plant diseases, but also harmful insects. When using products, you must first carefully study the composition and read the instructions for use.
