Selenium for cows is necessary for the normal functioning of vital processes in the body. The trace element affects metabolism, stimulates secretory functions, redox processes, improves resistance, immune potential. To avoid cattle diseases associated with vitamin E and selenium deficiency, veterinary experts recommend giving “E-selenium” as a supplement.
Composition, release form, packaging
"E-selenium" - injection solution. An opalescent transparent liquid of white, light yellow color and odorless.The concentrate dissolves quickly in water. The main active substances included in “E-selenium”:
- Selenium in the form of sodium selenite – 0.5 mg.
- Vitamin E (tocopherol acetate) – 50 g.
In addition to the main components, the veterinary drug also contains excipients: benzyl alcohol, water for injection, polyethylene-35-recinol. “E-Selenium” is packaged in glass bottles with a volume of 50-100 ml hermetically sealed with rubber caps and aluminum caps. Instructions are included with the packages.
In what cases is it used?
“E-selenium” compensates for the lack of selenium and vitamin E in the body of cattle and affects the absorption of vit. D3, A, increases resistance, immune potential, accelerates the elimination of toxic substances. The drug stimulates metabolic, reduction-oxidation processes. Has high antioxidant activity.
Indications for use of the drug for cattle:
- diseases of the reproductive system (frequent spontaneous abortions, placental abruption, cysts, ovarian inflammation, infertility);
- myositis, myocardial diseases (traumatic myositis);
- autoimmune diseases;
- reduction in milk yield;
- disturbances in the digestive tract (diarrhea, constipation, intestinal infections);
- to increase stress resistance;
- insufficient weight gain, gain in live weight;
- poisoning with chemicals, nitrates, phosphates, microtoxins, severe intoxication of the body;
- toxic liver dystrophy;
- to accelerate tissue regeneration after injuries and damage;
- cardiopathy, cardiovascular pathologies;
- hormonal imbalance.
Important! “E-selenium” is used in complex therapy of invasive, infectious, and viral diseases. Reduces the likelihood of developing complications after routine vaccinations and dewormings.
“E-selenium” is prescribed to farm animals with decreased immune responses, hypovitaminosis, iodine deficiency, and metabolic disorders. For young animals, the veterinary drug is indicated for developmental delays, growth, treatment of white muscle disease in newborn calves.
Instructions for use
According to the annotation, “E-selenium” is intended for intramuscular and subcutaneous injection. The dosage is selected by the veterinarian on an individual basis, taking into account the condition, age of the animals, and physiological indicators of the body. Recommended dosages:
- For adult cows – 1 ml per 50 kg of weight.
- For calves up to 3 months – 0.5 ml per 10 kg. The course is three months. The interval between injections is two weeks. The maximum number of injections is six.
- Young animals over three months old - 0.2 ml per 10 kg of weight. For prevention, the drug is administered once a month until puberty.
For preventive purposes, the veterinary drug is prescribed to adult cows once every two to four months (2-3 injections). With treatment – once every 7-10 days.
Important! If necessary, if “E-selenium” is used for cattle for medicinal purposes, the veterinarian can increase the dosage by 1.5-2 times.
The injection solution is prepared immediately before use so that the drug does not lose its properties.
Contraindications
Despite its high efficiency, “E-selenium” has a number of contraindications:
- excess selenium and vitamin E in the body of cows;
- individual intolerance, hypersensitivity to the components included in the solution.
If there are any contraindications, “E-selenium” is not prescribed to cows for therapeutic or prophylactic purposes.
Side effects
Side effects are noted when the recommended dosages specified in the annotation are not observed or exceeded, as well as when the body is individually intolerant to the components of “E-selenium”. Side effects:
- intestinal disorders;
- digestive disorders (vomiting, hypo-, atony of the proventriculus, cessation of chewing gum, refusal of feed);
- allergic reactions (skin rash, itching);
- toxic phenomena;
- salivation (increased salivation);
- tachycardia, pulse disturbance;
- pallor, cyanosis of mucous membranes;
- inadequate response to stimuli;
- increased sweating;
- a sharp drop in temperature;
- shallow rapid breathing, shortness of breath;
- the appearance of garlic odor from the mouth;
- muscle spasms.
To avoid the development of side effects, a single dosage for adult cows should not exceed 15 ml.
If side effects develop, stop taking the drug. Detoxification measures are carried out aimed at normalizing the general condition of animals. Antioxidants, cardiac glycosides, and hepatoprotectors are prescribed. “E-selenium” is replaced with analogues and other means.
Shelf life and storage conditions
The shelf life of “E-selenium” is indicated by the manufacturer on the packaging and is two years from the date of release. Store the veterinary drug in hermetically sealed bottles, in a cool, dark place, at a temperature of 9-22 degrees. Do not mix the product with feed, food, or other medications. The solution loses effectiveness in high humidity and when exposed to direct sunlight.
Important! After opening the bottle, E-Selenium should be used within two weeks.
After the expiration date, the veterinary drug is not suitable for use. Recyclable.
Personal prevention measures
E-selenium should be given to young animals, lactating and pregnant females with caution. Therapy and therapeutic measures are carried out under the supervision of a veterinarian.
Important! At the same time, “E-selenium” is not prescribed with vitamin C due to a decrease in the bioavailability of the drug. Do not use simultaneously with drugs containing arsenic.
Cattle are slaughtered for meat one month after discontinuation of the veterinary drug. In case of forced slaughter, meat products are suitable for feeding to carnivorous animals or must be disposed of.
