Beetroot is a valuable product that is rich in microelements and vitamins beneficial to the human body. When growing a plant, bushes sometimes shoot, which prevents the development of large root crops and reduces yield. Such bushes are not suitable for food.

Why do beets go to the arrow?
In the first year beet planting forms powerful foliage and large root crops, which are used for food. The next year, the root crops are replanted in the soil and then the beets begin to bloom. When the arrow begins to bloom, seeds are obtained from it for planting. But, to obtain seeds, root crops must go through the vernalization stage. This means that tubers must be stored at low temperatures for at least 100 days. The optimal range is considered to be from +5 to +7.
In some cases, the opposite situation occurs when root crops stored at the wrong temperature do not form flower stalks, but form lush rosettes of leaves. Among breeders, such tubers are called “stubborn”.
The reason for low-quality seeds is improper cultivation and storage of root vegetables. If the temperature conditions for storing root crops for seeds are repeatedly violated, then the beets grown from such seeds go into color.
Beetroot can fade into color due to planting of planting material in unheated soil. Beetroot is a heat-loving crop, and long-term exposure of planting material or tubers to low temperatures contributes to the plant blooming.
What to do if the beets have gone bad?
To prevent bolting, the soil in the garden bed should be at least +15 degrees. Seeds shoot when they are in cold soil for 15 to 30 days. The bush suffered especially heavily in the first year of planting. The plant will not go to waste if you choose the right planting time. The optimal time is the last days of April and the beginning of May, provided that the weather is warm. Sugar beets sow a few weeks earlier.
Having determined favorable dates, the seeds will not shoot and will not form dense deciduous thickets.
To prevent beetroot from starting to bloom, planting material is planted to a depth of 7 to 10 cm. This is the optimal depth at which most seeds of agricultural plants are planted. If the plant blooms, the root crops of such bushes grow small and unsuitable for food.
It is not difficult to grow a rich harvest and large root crops if you pay attention to growing beetroot. Then the tubers will be suitable for food. There are several factors to consider:
- Proper storage of planting material.
- Maintaining temperature conditions.
- Determination of favorable sowing dates.
And if the beets have gone bad, then you need to identify cultivation mistakes and try not to repeat them in the future.
It is believed that planting material is suitable for planting for 5–6 years. But it is advisable to plant seeds no later than 3 years of storage, otherwise the planting material will be lost. An important factor is soil preparation and its composition. The best soils for beets are fertile loamy or sandy loam soils.
During the period of sprout formation, beet beds need a lot of water. The soil is regularly loosened and fertilizers are applied. For example, manure, bird droppings, wood ash, manganese, magnesium or phosphorus. Other types of fertilizers are also used. You should not overfeed the beds. You can understand how much fertilizer is needed by the appearance of the bushes. Excessive foliage indicates an excess of nutrients.
