Description of the deutzia shrub, planting and care rules, why it doesn’t bloom

At the end of the 19th century, French missionaries collected seeds of mountain plants in China for the naturalist Maurice Vilmorin. This is how a sample of the Chinese deutia bush appeared in his collection, the description of which was previously compiled by the Swiss scientist Carl Thunberg. The Himalayan and Japanese species, brought by Dutch travelers, were also grown in Europe. The perennial gained wide recognition in the 20th century.

Description of action: general characteristics

The flowering deciduous shrub belongs to the Hydrangeaceae family. Carl Thunberg named him after his colleague and sponsor of his expeditions, the Dutch banker Johan van der Deutz.

The plant lives up to 25 years and is distinguished by long and abundant flowering. External features of the action:

Name Description
Height 45-200 centimeters
Form Round, spreading
Escapes Straight, bend under the weight of the inflorescences
Leaves Oblong, light green, sometimes wavy at the edges, change shade in autumn.
Flowers Small, reminiscent of bells or stars.

Any soil is suitable for the plant, but nutrient substrates are preferable. The shrub can withstand frost down to -24 degrees without loss.

When the temperature drops below 25 degrees below zero, the deytsia shoots freeze. Winter loss of branches is quickly replaced in spring.

Flowering action: features and timing

The flowers of the plant are bisexual, painted in white and pink shades. Most ornamental varieties do not smell. After flowering of natural varieties, the seed capsule ripens. Hybrid varieties do not always bear fruit.

Deutzia flowering time

Ornamental bushes bloom from late May to early September, depending on the variety. In the southern regions, flowering begins in the fourth week after the end of frost. In the northern regions, the deadline is shifted to mid-June.

Flowering duration

The bushes remain in bloom for twenty days to one and a half months, which also depends on the variety. The flowering period will be extended if you apply phosphorus-potassium fertilizer during the budding period and cut off fading inflorescences.

Year of flowering after planting

The plant first blooms flowers in the third year of growth in open ground. Sometimes seedlings obtained from cuttings bloom already in the second year. The rare variety of smooth action is the slowest and blooms only in the eighth year.

Types and varieties of action with photographs and descriptions

In botany, 72 species of shrubs are distinguished. Most of them are found in nature, but since the beginning of gardening cultivation, selective species have also appeared. Deutia varieties are early-flowering and late-flowering, differing in characteristics, growth rate and demands on growing conditions.

Slender or graceful

The homeland of the bush is the mountains of Japan. The maximum plant height is 1.5 meters. The light green leaves of some varieties acquire a golden and marbled white hue.

Benefits of acting slim:

  • unpretentious;
  • leaves turn red in autumn;
  • inflorescences do not fall off from rain;
  • winter-hardy.

Flaws:

  • sensitivity to waterlogging and salty soil;
  • slow growth.

Flowers on the bush appear in June. The plant is suitable for growing in a container.

Star-shaped or rough

The shrub is common in nature in China and the mountainous regions of Japan. The plant differs from other types of deutia in its dark bark with a red tint. The leaves and flowers are rough and feel like paper.

Advantages of the type:

  • flowering the next year after planting;
  • absence of root shoots;
  • does not attract aphids.

Flaws:

  • no aroma;
  • With age, the bark peels off.

The star variety blooms in July. In autumn the foliage turns yellow-brown.

Pink Pom Pom

The hybrid variety belongs to the Lemoine variety. The plant was obtained by crossing an elegant and small-flowered species. The shrub grows 1.5 meters in height and forms a rounded crown.The inflorescences consist of double pink flowers.

Advantages:

  • new and last year's shoots bloom;
  • inflorescences change from pink to white;
  • long-flowering variety.

The buds bloom on the bush in June and appear until September.

Flaws:

  • shoots are hollow inside and break easily;
  • the bark of old bushes peels off;
  • sensitivity to frost.

The Pink Pom Pom variety is not recommended for planting in full sun. The plant needs partial shade.

Hybrid action

The variety was developed as a result of selection. Its ancestors are Deutzia gracica and Amur. The height of the bush reaches 2 meters. The inflorescences are paniculate, boiling white, appear in June and decorate the bushes for 1.5 months.

Advantages:

  • long flowering;
  • disease resistance.

Flaws:

  • shelter for the winter is necessary;
  • requirement for care.

Hybrid deutsias are more sensitive to direct sunlight. Plants require a shaded area and moderate watering.

Pink Deutzia

The hybrid variety was obtained by mixing the genes of purple and graceful action. The shrub is distinguished by its height of no more than a meter and white-pink flowers.

Advantages:

  • slightly curled petals add splendor to the inflorescences;
  • delicate decoration for rock garden.

The pink variety blooms early, from May to June.

Flaws:

  • slow growth;
  • does not smell;
  • requires feeding and shelter for the winter.

The pink variety prefers fertile soil and an area with more light than shade.

Tourbillon Rouge

The hybrid shrub reaches 2 meters in height. The crown of the plant takes the shape of a vase. The petals are white in the center and dark pink at the edges.

Advantages of the variety:

  • rich aroma of flowers;
  • fast growth.

Deutzia Turbilon Rouge is considered one of the most frost-resistant varieties along with hydrangea. Over the course of a year, the shoots of the bush grow by 25 centimeters.

Flaws:

  • needs feeding;
  • sensitivity to waterlogging.

Flowers on the bush appear from July to August. Last year's shoots also bloom, so they should not be cut off prematurely.

Application of action in landscape design

Decorative shrubs decorate the walls of a house or gazebo and are planted next to the porch or veranda. Spreading branches strewn with flowers look picturesque on alleys next to benches, borders, and in the center of a flower bed.

Naturally rounded bushes do not require shaping pruning.

Deutzia hedge: creation and care

The flowering Asian shrub looks especially luxurious when planted in a line or in a checkerboard pattern. The shoots form a dense wall, allowing you to delimit the garden into zones, create geometric lines or a labyrinth.

Varieties for creating hedges

The tallest and most luxuriantly flowering varieties of deutia are suitable for decorative planting. These include:

  • Lemoine is a winter-hardy hybrid with white flowers 1.5 meters high;
  • Amurskaya - an elegant bush with white star-shaped flowers 1 meter high;
  • Candidissima - distinguished by pink and white inflorescences, grows above 2 meters;
  • Strawberry Fields is a vibrant variety with dark pink petals with a white edge and center.

Four varieties are popular in landscaping, available in nurseries and also suitable for single or composition planting.

Planting a hedge

Seedlings are placed at intervals of 1 meter. For a straight hedge, you can dig a trench instead of single holes. Pebbles or crushed stone are placed on the bottom for drainage.The extracted soil is mixed with humus, as with normal planting. The finished hedge is watered, the soil is loosened and covered with peat mulch.

Hedge care

To keep the action in order, sanitary pruning in spring and autumn is enough. After wintering, you will need to remove broken and frozen branches. At the end of the season, after sap flow has stopped, the bush is thinned out. If the growth of shoots has slowed down and there are fewer inflorescences, the plant is “rejuvenated” - cut off by two-thirds.

Lack of flowering in deytia: causes and solutions

The main reason for the shrub’s refusal to bloom is a lack of nutrients or oversaturation of the soil with nitrogen. Before flowering, it is necessary to stop fertilizing with bird droppings, manure, and ammonium nitrate. These fertilizers are good during the period of bud awakening and shoot development. For deutzia to bloom, it needs potassium and phosphorus.

Other reasons for the lack of flowers are freezing of the shoots. Hybrid varieties must be wrapped for the winter: tie the branches with twine and put a cover made of agrofibre or burlap on top.
