History of creation
The hybrid was created by Evgeny Pavlovsky, a specialist at the Potapenko Institute, who studied with the famous Russian winegrower Ivan Kostrikin. The grapes created on the basis of the Talisman and Mirage varieties are the best and most popular brainchild of the scientist, which has repeatedly received awards at international competitions.
The Surgeon's Memory variety was created recently, but has managed to fall in love with farmers in all CIS countries. Why Pavlovsky gave such an interesting name to his grapes and who this mysterious surgeon is is unknown.
Description and characteristics of the variety
The Surgeon's Memory grapes are included in the category of table varieties intended for fresh consumption. The variety is early ripening, maturity occurs in 120 days.
The bushes are strong and tall. The leaves are three-lobed, initially bright green, becoming richer in color as the growing season progresses. The clusters are cone-shaped and heavy, but the fruits do not fit each other very tightly. The mass of the bunch ranges from 700 g to 1 kg.
The berries are slightly elongated, weigh 10-12 g. The skin is medium-dense, green-golden when unripe, and as it ripens it acquires an even pink color and is covered with a white waxy coating. The taste is soft, sweet, with slight sourness. The pulp is juicy. Muscat-strawberry aroma.
Content of substances that determine taste:
- sugar – 22 g/cm3;
- sugar content – 17-19%;
- acidity – 7 g/l;
- tartaric acid – 0.6% in 1 liter of juice.
The Surgeon's Memory variety is immune to cold. It is not afraid of frosts down to -23 °C. Cooler temperatures in the growing region require shelter.
Also, grapes, subject to proper care, are practically not affected by fungal infections.
Advantages and disadvantages
Grapes in Memory of the Surgeon are popular for the fact that:
- ripens quickly;
- looks beautiful on a personal plot;
- does not lose its presentation during long-term transportation;
- easily takes root thanks to a strong root system;
- remains in the active phase until late autumn, due to low sensitivity to cold.
Of the minuses it should be noted:
- low degree of ripening after grafting to another plant;
- susceptibility to the formation of growths;
- high probability of wasp attack due to the sweetness and aroma of the fruit;
- the formation of small berries due to unfavorable conditions or poor care.
Pollinator varieties
If the air temperature is low during the flowering period of grapes, the pollination process is inhibited. As a result, the bunches turn out to be sparse, loose, and the yield is significantly reduced. If the air humidity is high, then the moistening of the stamens makes it difficult for pollen to spread through the air. Low humidity also negatively affects pollination.
It is impossible to predict weather conditions, so many farmers take insurance and plant pollinating varieties of the sultana variety next to the In Memory of the Surgeon grapes:
- Premier;
- Zaporozhye;
- Moldavian;
- Veles;
- Sprinter;
- Rusbol;
- Rilines.
Growing grapes In memory of a surgeon
Grapes grow fully in loose, fertile soil. The best option is black soil. But the plant also feels good on sandstone and sandy loam, provided that organic fertilizing is added.
Selection of seedlings
The surgeon's memory is a new variety. Therefore, to obtain a high-quality harvest, it is better to buy a seedling rather than graft onto other grapes.
The seedling should be selected in a store or nursery, and not taken from hand. When purchasing, you need to carefully examine the roots and the above-ground part. The selected seedling must have strong, developed, undamaged roots without signs of drying out, rot, infection or insect damage.The grafted plant should have a vine length of up to 45 cm, roots - about 0.5 m. The seedling must include at least one shoot of at least 10 cm.
You can make a small scratch on the end of the spine. If the internal green tissues are revealed, then such a plant is not worth buying.
Deadlines
The Surgeon's Memory grapes are propagated independently by cuttings or by purchasing ready-made seedlings. Cuttings are harvested in the fall and kept in the basement or other cool place until spring. In February, they are planted in a container and placed in a warm place for rooting. After the roots appear, they are moved to the light.
Planting of grapes in open ground is carried out in the middle or end of May. Some gardeners advise planting the crop in the fall, in mid-September. They justify their opinion by the fact that:
- in autumn, the likelihood of root damage from a fungal infection decreases;
- The plant will get stronger over the winter and begin active development in the spring.
The issue of landing time is not fundamental. Gardeners focus on the climatic conditions in the growing region and individual preferences.
Planting scheme
The Surgeon's Memory grapes are planted according to the standard algorithm:
- Dig a hole suitable for the volume of the roots, 80 cm deep.
- Drainage is made at the bottom. On top of it, soil with humus is poured to a third of the depth of the hole.
- A day before planting, the seedling is placed in a container with water. A few hours before the procedure, a root growth stimulator is added to the water.
- The seedling is placed in the hole so that the root collar rises slightly above the soil surface.
- The hole is dug in. A mound about 15 cm in height is made around the root collar.
- The grapes are tied up and fed with a small portion of mineral fertilizers and organic matter.
- The earth is watered.To preserve soil moisture, mulch with sawdust or moss.
Tips for caring for grapes
Caring for grapes is easy. Care cannot be ignored, since the yield and quality of the fruit depend on it.
Watering and fertilizing
According to the recommendation of the creator of the variety, watering according to the standard scheme: before flowering and after the flowers wither.
Bush formation
The Surgeon's Memory variety is quite strong and tall. Therefore, young bushes are pruned by 4-5 buds, adults - by 6-8.
Grapes tend to grow a lot of greenery. Therefore, pruning excess shoots is a mandatory stage of care during the active growing season.
Preparing for winter
Despite the winter hardiness of grapes, in regions where winter temperatures drop to -20 °C, insulating shelter is required.
But don't cover it too early. The Surgeon's Memory grape remains in an active state until frost, and under the covering material it rots. Therefore, they cover it when a stable air temperature of about -5 °C forms.
Disease and pest control
The Surgeon's Memory variety is resistant to fungal infections, but if there are errors in care, the plant can develop mildew, gray rot, and powdery mildew. Moreover, fungal infection is usually intense.
The main treatment is the use of fungicides. Spraying is carried out 3 times:
- when the shoots reach a length of 15 cm;
- before flowering;
- when forming berries the size of a pea.
To prevent infectious pathologies, the soil is mulched, fertilized with a mineral complex, shoots are pruned in a timely manner and weeds are removed.
Among insects, grapes can be attacked by mites and phylloxera. Insecticides are used against ticks.Only insecticidal prophylaxis is applicable against phylloxera; it is impossible to get rid of the parasite - the diseased plant is dug up and burned.
Harvest and storage
The grapes are harvested in late August and early autumn. The berries hang on the branches for a long time without losing their presentation. Maturity is determined by the color of the skin, waxy coating, sweet taste of the pulp, and easy separation of the berry from the stalk.
The grapes are harvested in clear, dry weather. The bunch is cut with pruning shears or garden shears, being careful not to damage the fruits or erase plaque from them. Otherwise, the shelf life of the crop will be significantly reduced. Before storing, remove dried and rotten fruits.
Store grapes in a damp cellar or other cool, ventilated room, the temperature in which does not exceed +4 °C. If the harvest is small, you can put it in the refrigerator. The best storage method is in wooden boxes. The clusters are laid in one layer and covered with sawdust. You can also hang grapes on a wire.
The good thing about Memory Surgeon grapes is that they can be stored for a long time without losing their taste or presentation. It is not subject to rotting, flattening, or cracking.
