Often agronomists decide which tomatoes to plant in the countryside in order to get a large harvest from tomatoes that are resistant to harsh climates. The Eternal Call tomato, one of the most beloved by vegetable growers in the cool regions of Russia, fits these requirements.
Description of the variety
The tomato variety Eternal Call is classified as Siberian and tolerates low temperatures well - recommended for cultivation even in the northern regions of the country. Tomatoes of this variety can be grown both in a greenhouse and in open ground - the bushes produce abundant harvests after the appearance of 4 - 5 clusters.
The description of the variety Eternal Call stipulates that this is an early variety; the bush itself reaches a height of 65–70 cm. The fruits are large, round, somewhat flat on the sides, red in color at the ripening stage, weigh 300–500 grams, although some specimens of the variety can grow larger up to 800 - 900 g. Sweet and fleshy tomatoes are well kept fresh and transported over long distances.
The characteristics of the variety note that the yield of the Eternal Call is high: from 1 sq. m you can collect about 3.6 - 3.8 kg of tomatoes. The duration of fresh fruit storage in a cool and well-ventilated dark room is 40–45 days.
The presented variety is the best option if you love tomatoes and want to grow them where other varieties simply cannot survive.
Pros and cons of the Eternal Call variety
The advantages that are characteristic of tomatoes of this variety, breeders include:
- High yield - from one bush you can get up to 4 kilograms of juicy and tasty fruits.
- Large, good-tasting fruits that are well preserved and transported.
- The ability to grow in the northern regions - due to the fact that Eternal Call is a frost-resistant and early variety, the fruits have time to ripen even with an extremely short summer period.
- With a slight degree of immaturity, tomatoes are easily transported over long distances.
The only disadvantage of this variety is that the ripe fruits of the first harvest will have a presentable appearance (large, with good taste), but subsequent tomatoes will be smaller and not so juicy.
How to grow properly
As reviews from vegetable growers who grow this variety on their own plots show, Eternal Call tomatoes have shown their best performance.Tomatoes are unpretentious to growing conditions and produce abundant harvests.
Seeds for seedlings are planted 55 - 60 days before planting the seedling in a soil mixture, which you can buy in a store or prepare yourself. To do this, mix garden soil, humus and coarse river sand in a ratio of 3:3:1. For disinfection purposes, it is better to fry the soil by steaming or in the oven.
Seeds are sown in the mixture, sprinkled no more than 2 - 3 mm and covered with film. It is important to observe certain conditions: daylight for seedlings should be at least 14 - 16 hours, and the temperature should be within 23 - 25 degrees. After diving for hardening, the seedlings are reduced to 18 - 20 degrees.
Watering should be regular, but not abundant, avoiding stagnation of water in the pan and acidification of the soil. It is recommended to spray the seedlings with a spray bottle.
The shoots are fed for the first time 2 weeks after picking, and then fertilizers need to be applied 2 - 3 more times, maintaining an interval of 15 days.
Planting seedlings and caring for tomatoes
In order for tomatoes to produce high yields, no more than 2 - 3 seedlings are planted per square meter of area, which will give the bushes enough space. The soil around each plant is cultivated every 9-10 days, pre-watering. The soil can be any, but black soil or soil pre-mixed with humus is better. The main thing is looseness and good breathability. The planting pattern is 40 by 50 cm between bushes. Be sure to carry out pinching, leaving no more than 3 side shoots on the bush.
It is better if cucumbers or parsley, zucchini and cauliflower, and carrots grew earlier in the area where tomatoes are planted. It is recommended to water tomatoes after sunset or in the morning in cloudy weather - this will save the plant from water getting on the greens and sunburn. At the very beginning of the growth of tomatoes, watering should be regular, moderate, and as they flower and bear fruit - abundantly.
As experienced gardeners note, it is better to combine watering with fertilizing, but this is not necessary. Tomatoes are fed for the first time 2 weeks after planting seedlings in open ground - this can be organic fertilizers or organic compounds with a high percentage of mineral compounds.
It is optimal if the first feeding is a mixture of mullein and superphosphates in a ratio of 8:1. Dilute the composition in water. Subsequent feedings should be dry. The composition is as follows: per square meter of soil take ammonium nitrate, superphosphate and potassium salt in a ratio of 1:2:1.5.
The variety has heavy fruits, so the bush needs to be pinched regularly and tied up as the clusters ripen. It is enough to leave no more than 2 - 4 lateral main shoots. The plants are tied to wooden stakes dug at a distance of 10 cm.
Most often, tomatoes of the Eternal Call variety are affected by late blight. With timely treatment of the bed, the disease can be prevented. It is enough to treat the tomatoes with a 1% solution of Bordeaux mixture before planting seedlings and 2 weeks later. Tomatoes of this variety are quite resistant to parasites and pathogenic microorganisms.
