Characteristics and description of the Moskvich tomato variety, its yield

For cultivation in open ground, the Moskvich tomato was created and registered in 1976, resistant to low temperatures and a number of diseases of nightshade crops. A low plant with a compact root system is successfully grown in small garden plots, balconies and loggias.

Everything you need to know about Moskvich tomatoes

When carrying out breeding work, special attention was paid to the variety’s resistance to temperature changes and ripening periods.It is these factors that are important for a heat-loving crop, which is poorly suited for cultivation in the conditions of risky Russian agriculture. As a result, the Moskvich variety was highly appreciated and was recommended for use in the Volga, Central regions and horticultural zones of the Urals, Siberia and the Far East. Any characteristic and description of the Moskvich tomato variety demonstrates the success of Russian breeders who managed to select and consolidate the most important qualities.

Description and main characteristics

The tomato is characterized by ease of care, good yield, and high taste and marketability of the fruit.

  1. The bush, about 40 cm high, belongs to the category of determinant, standard plants. The short, strong, erect stem can survive without being tied to a support.
  2. The leaves and ovaries are arranged more compactly, which, despite their small size, provides good yield, up to 4.5 kg per square meter of planting.
  3. A limited number of stepsons, an average leaf size, and a small green mass do not take away the plant’s strength and time in conditions of a limited warm period.
  4. The root system is located in the surface layers of the soil, ensuring rapid rooting and maximum absorption of nutrients and moisture.
  5. Growth is limited to 5-7 brushes. Inflorescences begin to form from the level of 6-8 leaves. The ripening of tomatoes on the grapevine occurs simultaneously, almost simultaneously.
  6. “Moskvich” is an early ripening variety, in which 90-110 days pass from germination to the tomatoes reaching technical maturity.
  7. The variety is resistant to late blight, fusarium, a number of fungal diseases, and verticella wilt. This is facilitated by varietal characteristics and a short growing season.

The timing often depends on care, compliance with agrotechnical rules, choice of location and methods of preparing seedlings.

Taste characteristics and purpose of fruits

The fruit is smooth, round, deep red in color, with slight ribbing at the base. Weight ranges from 55 to 75 g. The skin is strong, but not rough. Tomatoes are distinguished by dense, juicy pulp. The taste of tomatoes grown in open ground is intensely sweet, according to tasters, good and excellent.

Moskvich tomatoes are used for various types of preparations and fresh consumption. Their small size and dense consistency make them most suitable for pickling and pickling. They are also used for preparing tomato puree, salads, and decorating dishes. The fruits performed well during transportation and storage. Therefore, not only gardeners are interested in them. Farmers plant low-maintenance plants for commercial purposes.

Agricultural technology and care

Plants with a standard bush type and restrictions on the number of clusters have a number of advantages over traditional tomatoes.

Growing seedlings and planting in the ground

To obtain a guaranteed harvest, tomatoes are grown in seedlings:

  • sowing of seeds for seedlings is carried out in the last ten days of March, early April;
  • in the phase of 1-2 leaves, the plant can be planted in small, personal cups;
  • replanting into the ground traditionally occurs in the second half of May;
  • It is advisable to choose a sunny place for planting, protected from the wind;
  • the distance between the bushes is 30-40 cm and the row spacing is 60 cm.

According to some gardeners, 6 to 8 plants can be placed per square meter.

Rules for caring for tomatoes in open ground

"Moskvich", like all low-growing varieties, does not require regular removal of stepsons, formation of a bush, or garter. Maintenance is minimal, but still necessary:

  • at the initial stage, the plants are covered with film until the danger of sub-zero temperatures has passed;
  • like all tomatoes, the variety is responsive to a balanced soil composition;
  • The plant likes moderate but regular watering;
  • You should fertilize with complex fertilizers once every three weeks before the fruit appears;
  • If the rules are followed, fruit ripening lasts from the beginning of July to the end of August.

However, you should keep the area free of weeds and loosen the soil after watering. Anyone who has planted tomatoes understands that these simple measures will help prevent the occurrence of root rot and the spread of pests.

The Moskvich variety has become well established in gardens and summer cottages over many years. Its unpretentiousness, resistance to the vagaries of weather and common diseases are an undeniable advantage in comparison with other, more spectacular tomato varieties.
