Growing ferruginous cherries became popular not so long ago, because it was believed that the climate suitable for the crop was in the countries of East Asia. The decorative relative of sakura rarely bears fruit, but decorates the area with dignity - during the flowering period the plant is covered with exquisite blooms. Growing shrubs will not cause difficulties, but first you need to familiarize yourself with the rules of agricultural technology.
History of origin
Ferruginous cherry is a distant relative of the famous sakura. The homeland of the plant is Korea, China.From these countries, not so long ago, shrubs were brought to Russia, which in their homeland are considered wild and densely populate forests.
There are many plant varieties, and every year breeders try to develop new ones. The lifespan of bushes is up to one hundred years.
Description of the variety
Unlike distant relatives, ferruginous cherry is not a tree. This is a lush shrub, reaching a height of up to one and a half meters. The plant has several main trunks, differing in diameter, and a lot of lateral shoots.
Flowering begins at the end of May. The duration is at least half a month, only after which the flower petals fall off. The shrub bears fruit - berries up to a centimeter in diameter. The fruits are edible.
Features of cultivation
Ferruginous cherries are unpretentious in care and are no different from other garden crops. Among the processes that will have to be followed:
- regular watering;
- introduction of nutritional compounds;
- loosening the soil;
- pest and disease control;
- preventative treatments;
- pruning
A prerequisite for successful cultivation of ferruginous cherries is the choice of location. Errors in plant placement threaten the death of the bush.
Choosing a landing site
It is recommended to plant seedlings in cozy corners of the garden. There should be no drafts. It is necessary to take into account that it is warm in the plant’s homeland, so plant the shrub in an open area, making sure that there are no drafts.
Landing
Plant shrubs in the spring, with the onset of stable warmth. Prepare the hole according to the size of the root system. Prepare the mixture for sprinkling the roots by mixing:
- clay;
- coarse sand;
- compost (rotted);
- garden soil.
If the soil has a poor composition, add mineral fertilizers.When planting, monitor the level of the root collar - the point should rise 2-4 cm above the soil surface. Complete planting by laying a layer of mulch.
Care
Cherry care glandular, as even novice gardeners are convinced, is simple. The main thing is to take into account all the requirements of the plant, of which there are few. You will have to look after the bush especially carefully during the dry season; a lack of moisture will cause the roots to dry out and the bush to die.
Watering
Water ferruginous cherries only in the hot season. Use warm liquid, first leave the water in the sun for a day. It is recommended to water in loose soil, this will allow moisture to penetrate deep into the soil. Add liquid in small portions, waiting until completely absorbed.
Trimming
Carry out pruning in the fall. It is not recommended to thin out the shoots too much; remove only dry, damaged branches. If there is too much growth near the main stems, thin out partially. It is recommended to remove excess shoots along with a small part of the root, this will prevent the appearance of new branches.
Reproduction
Study cherry propagation glandular is recommended in spring. The easiest way to acquire young plants is to divide an adult shrub. Carry out replanting carefully, leaving a lump of soil, this will speed up the adaptation of the division in the new place.
Propagation by seeds is a more labor-intensive and time-consuming method. It will take several years to obtain a full-fledged plant. It is better to first grow the seeds on a windowsill, like houseplants, only to move them into the garden after a year.
Diseases and pests
The plant is affected by diseases that are inherent in ordinary garden crops.Among the most common diseases:
- Coccomycosis (affects leaves, fruits, flowers). Fight with Bordeaux mixture and oxychloride. Treatments are carried out by irrigating the leaves.
- Moniliosis. Causes drying of leaves and shoots. The only way to combat it is to use copper-based compounds.
- Monilial burn. Gradual withering of leaves and shoots. After 1-2 years the bush dies completely. The drug used to combat the disease is Fundazol.
Pests practically do not attack the plant. Among the few enemies, aphids can be noted, which are capable of occupying tender shoots. Use a home remedy - an infusion of wood ash (200 g of ash per liter of water, leave for 24 hours). Irrigate daily until the pests disappear.
With proper care, the ferruginous cherry will certainly become the pearl of the site, standing out with exquisite flowers during flowering and filling the area with fragrance. Growing the crop will not cause much difficulty, but you must strictly follow the basic rules of agricultural technology; this will prevent the death of the bush and allow you to grow a lush plant.
