Cherry is rightfully recognized as everyone’s favorite. And when the fragrant beauty is one of the first fruits to ripen, you like it even more. Speaking about early varieties of cherries, we should mention the Memory Vavilov cherry. It was introduced relatively recently, but has already gained fans in many countries. Thanks to the characteristics and features of planting and care, growing the variety turns into a pleasant wait for the harvest.
History of selection and region of breeding
“Vavilovskaya” cherry is dedicated to the great Russian breeder N.I. Vavilov.Bred in 1985, in the city of Michurinsk. The authors of the development were Russian breeders S.V. Zhukov. and Kharitonova E.N. The basis for this fruit was open-pollinated seedlings, the variety of which is unknown.
The memorable variety was included in the state register of fruit varieties in some regions of Russia, Ukraine and Belarus.
Description of the variety
Cherry in memory of Vavilov is a self-sterile variety, so another variety of cherry is required nearby for pollination. Fruiting occurs from 4 years after planting. Flowering is early, harvesting occurs in the 20th of July.
In the description of the variety, it is important to indicate that the yield reaches 20 kilograms, taking into account compliance with the growing requirements.
Characteristics:
- Taste properties are rated 4 out of 5 points.
- Sugar is 11%.
- Organic acids – 1.6%.
- Dry matter – 18.1%.
- Ascorbic acid – 21.65 milligrams/100 grams.
Appearance
Let's look at the appearance of all parts of the cherry.
Tree
The crown of the tree has the shape of a wide pyramid, the foliage is not too dense. The bark is light brown with a green tint. Young shoots are more greenish in color than brownish. Such branches are flexible and bend strongly. The buds and leaves are large. The first ones are cone-shaped, the top is pointed and deviates from the shoot.
Fruits and foliage
The fruits are the same size, heart-shaped. Weight ranges from 3.6 grams to 4.2, which is average. The base is round, recessed, the tail is pointed. The ripe fruit is dark red, the inside is several shades lighter. The inside is juicy and soft. The bone is large, oval in shape.
Planting and care
If the seedling is from a container, it can be planted from spring to early autumn. If the roots are bare - only in spring.Prepare the planting site, considering it taking into account the need for space for roots. The recommended area for cherries is 4x4 meters. The site should be sunny but windless. Ideal if there is a wall or fence nearby. Grows in loamy and sandy soils.
Important! A couple of days before planting, fill the hole with two buckets of water. This will allow the soil to become saturated with moisture.
Dig a hole 0.6 meters deep and the same diameter. Mix the extracted soil with fertilizers. Place the seedling so that the transition point from the roots to the trunk is 7 centimeters above the ground. Sprinkle with soil and tamp. We form a hole around the trunk with a radius of up to 40 centimeters and fill it with three buckets of settled water.
When planting, the tree should be trimmed immediately. Prune dead wood and damaged branches annually. If there is abundant growth, it is worth thinning out - give the crown its shape. After planting, you should water the plant to the tips of the roots, to a depth of 50 centimeters. This is achieved by watering one bucket a couple of times a week. If the summer is dry, increase the volume of water consumed to 2 buckets.
Mulching with organic fertilizers will help retain moisture in the soil. Lay them around the trunk up to 10 centimeters thick. The soil should be loosened superficially and weeds should be removed around the tree.
Reproduction
To make cuttings, cut a shoot from a tree (red at the base and hardened) and place it in water. To speed up the root growth process, growth regulators can be added to the water. This should also be done with caution: the twig is placed in the solution only for 18 hours, and no more than one and a half centimeters of the plant should be in the water.
Prepare the soil the day before. You need to place a peat-sand mixture in the beds, then coarse sand. Level the soil with a rake, water it, and fertilize it with superphosphate. Place the cutting vertically 3 centimeters into the soil and cover with film. As it grows, make sure the plant is watered and not damaged by the sun.
Diseases and pests
The variety is not susceptible to coccomycosis, but moniliosis has every chance of affecting cherries. A tree susceptible to fungal infections begins to dry out quickly and eventually dies.
To prevent this, apply fungicides three times a year - before, during and after flowering.
