Rabbit breeders have to treat various diseases of their pets. Diseases that lead to the death of animals deserve special attention. Timely and correct treatment is the key to the recovery of pets. "Eimeterm" is an anticoccidial agent for rabbits that exhibits a wide spectrum of action. The drug is used to combat parasites and as a disease prevention.
Composition and release form of the drug
The drug is prepared in the form of a 5% suspension for oral use."Eimeterm" belongs to the group of triazinetriones (anticoccidial drugs). The main active ingredient is toltrazuril (50 mg is contained in 1 ml of suspension), which causes the death of parasites.
The Eimeterm suspension is available in 100 ml plastic bottles. It is recommended to shake the liquid in the bottle before use.
Indications for use of the product
The drug is prescribed for the treatment of rabbits against coccidiosis and as a preventive measure, since the disease is often found on farms. As a rule, the peak of the spread of the disease occurs during the warm period of the year. Most often, rabbits aged 3-5 months become infected with parasites. Adults are predominantly carriers of the infection. Rabbits become infected when they absorb their mother's milk.
The duration of the initial period of illness is several days. Common symptoms:
- persistent diarrhea or constipation;
- bloating in the abdomen or groin area;
- convulsions.
Animals rapidly lose weight, their fur loses its shine and takes on a disheveled appearance. If treatment is not started in a timely manner, animals die within 12-14 days.
Instructions for use of "Eimeterm" for rabbits
To treat and prevent the disease, rabbits from one month of age receive a single dose of 0.14 mg per kilogram of weight. It should be borne in mind that the drug does not eliminate clinical symptoms, so rabbits are additionally prescribed drugs for pathogenetic therapy.
If the disease is severe (neurological signs are observed in the form of convulsions, sudden falls with the head thrown back), then after 5 days the administration of the Eimeterm suspension is repeated.
The drug is administered orally - liquid is squeezed onto the root of the tongue with a syringe or using an automatic dispenser (1 ml of the product is released per press). To ensure that the sediment is evenly distributed, the medicinal substance must be shaken well before use.
For preventive purposes, the drug is administered to animals even in the absence of signs of illness. The reasons for the spread of parasites may be non-compliance with sanitary standards (infrequent cleaning of premises, small cages, high air humidity and drafts, sudden changes in diet, lack of vitamins).
Contraindications
The drug has no clearly defined contraindications. Sometimes animals may experience allergy symptoms caused by individual sensitivity to the active substance. In such cases, the rabbit is prescribed antihistamines.
Side effects of the drug
The disadvantage of the product is the long period of removal of the active substance from the body of rabbits. When treating animals with Eimeterm, you need to take into account that after slaughter their meat cannot be eaten, since the drug is very toxic to the human body. Animal slaughter is allowed approximately 2-2.5 months after the use of the medicinal substance.
Storage Features
Considering the toxicity of the drug to humans, it is advisable to allocate a separate place for storing vials, protected from light and moisture. Recommended temperature range is 5-25 °C.
What analogues are there?
Several broad-spectrum antibiotics can be used to treat and prevent coccidiosis."Zinaprim", thanks to the combination of sulfamethazine and trimethoprim, is suitable for the treatment of coccidiosis, rhinitis, enteritis, pneumonia.
The main active ingredient of Baytril is enrofloxacin, which also suppresses the development of gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria. Rabbits tolerate the drug well, but the injections are quite painful.
Raising rabbits is a troublesome task. Newborn rabbits very vulnerable and can become infected with parasites immediately after birth. Therefore, for therapeutic and preventive purposes, it is recommended to have medications in your veterinary kit.
