Early fruiting and resistant to low sub-zero temperatures - this is a description of the Shalunya cherry variety. The tree is unpretentious in care. Anyone who places such a seedling on the plot will have a good harvest every year. Before planting, it is important to select a tree according to all criteria and provide it with proper care.
History of origin
The variety was obtained by crossing the Samsonovka and Kievskaya varieties. The authors are the Turovtsevs, working at the Horticultural Institute named after. M. F. Sidorenko.
The variety was registered in the register in 1997.
Description of the variety
The description of the variety states that the tree is spreading and of medium height. The crown of Shalunya is moderately dense and has a spherical shape. The shoots are medium thick and brownish-brown.
The foliage is smooth, glossy, pointed, and has a pronounced green color. The fruits grow on annual long growths.
The berries are dark burgundy in color. Weight up to 6 g. They have a small round stone that comes away from the pulp perfectly. The surface is smooth and shiny. The taste is sweet, with sourness.
The tasting gave 4.8 points.
Features of cultivation
Knowing the rules of planting and growing, you can create the most suitable conditions for the seedling.
Selection of seedlings
When selecting a seedling, the growing region is taken into account. The variety is cultivated in the North Caucasus region.
The tree for planting must have a good root system. No damage or signs of diseases or pests. The wood must be mature.
Planting material 1-2 years old, grafted with cuttings, tolerates replanting well. Such plants can grow up to 110 cm in height.
If the seedling is purchased with leaves, they must be cut off. After this, the rhizome is wrapped in damp burlap and placed in a bag.
If the tree was purchased in the fall and planted later, it is buried on the site.
Choosing a landing site
The tree loves light, so it is better to plant it on the sunny side. The ideal location for groundwater is 1.5-2 meters below the roots. Suitable soil is sandy and loamy.
Landing
Basic Rules:
- Before planting, damaged and dry roots are cut off from the seedling. The branches of the crown are shortened by ⅔, and the central conductor is shortened to the first branch. The cuts must be treated with garden varnish.
- Soak the root in water for 10 hours.You can add any drug that promotes root formation to the water, for example “Radifarm” or “Kornevin”.
- Dig a hole: depth 50 cm, width and length - 80 cm.
- You need to drive a stake into the center, which will serve as a support.
- Make a small elevation at the bottom and place the seedling on it, straighten the roots and move them tightly to the support.
- It is important not to bury the tree. The root collar should be level with the ground.
- Cover with soil, compacting well.
- Pour in two buckets of settled water.
- Water will cause the soil to settle. You can level the level by adding dry soil.
- Tie the seedling to a support.
- Mulch the area around the trunk to retain moisture longer.
- When planting several trees, the distance between them should be at least 3 meters.
Tree care
Proper care affects the yield of the tree.
Watering
It is necessary to water according to the following scheme:
- after flowering;
- during the formation of the ovary;
- after harvesting the fruits;
- before the onset of frost.
A furrow is made along the perimeter of the crown, where water is poured. The average volume of water required is 6 buckets. Water is added as it is absorbed, slowly.
Trimming
Cherry requires regular pruning, this allows you to extend its life, form a crown, increase the yield, and remove old branches.
Pruning is carried out from a young seedling. Otherwise, the tree will quickly become overgrown. Pruning is carried out before sap flow. The shoots that remain should face in different directions. The cuts must be treated with garden varnish.
Top dressing
Cherries require periodic feeding with mineral and organic fertilizers.
Pollinators
The minx is self-sterile. Pollinators are Chernokorka and Samsonovka.
Preparing for winter
The surrounding circle is loosened or dug up.The cherries are watered with water and fed with fertilizers. This must be done in advance so that the tree has time to be saturated with useful substances and overwinter well.
To prevent the spread of pests and parasites, cut off all damaged branches and burn.
Diseases and pests
Shalunya cherry variety is resistant to many diseases affecting stone fruit crops.
Carry out preventive pest control measures. Before the buds open, treat the bark with Bordeaux mixture.
Common pests include aphids and fruit flies. Only treatment with chemicals will help get rid of them.
